Release Information

Statement introduced in Release 10.0 of Junos OS.

Description

Disable or enable the comfort noise generation feature. Comfort noise generation is enabled by default. To disable it for a station, add the comfort-noise-generation disable statement to the analog template. When an analog template is applied to an analog station, the station inherits the configuration.

Comfort noise is artificial background noise introduced into a transmission to create a low, natural background sound to a telephone conversation when no one is speaking.

Use of the voice activity detection (VAD) feature and the clarity of digital lines can produce periods of total silence between speech. Protracted periods of silence can have unwanted results. For example, they can cause a person to think that they have lost the connection and hang up. Periods of silence can also result in choppy-sounding speech.

Comfort noise generation helps to create a sense of continuity by filling in the silent portions of a telephone conversation.
