Understanding Integrated Convergence Services Call Parking

This topic gives an overview of the call park feature that lets you configure the SRX Series survivable call server (SRX Series SCS) to give users the ability to park an active call and pick up their call or that of another user later. You can use this feature when the peer call server is unavailable to provide the same or a similar feature. You can use call parking to put a call on hold and let another person answer it.

To implement the call park feature, you configure a primary logical extension, which you can think of as a parking lot. You must also configure a range of logical extensions following the primary one that are used for temporarily holding discrete calls. You can think of these extensions as parking slots.

When engaged in an active phone call, a user can put the call on hold by transferring it to the parking lot without the caller hearing the transfer process. (This is referred to as a blind transfer.)

When the user parks the call, the (logical) extension number of the parking slot where the call is parked is announced before the original user’s connection to the call is dropped. To park the call, the user presses the transfer button and dials the extension of the parking slot.

The original recipient of the call or another user can pick up the call and resume the conversation from any phone by calling the extension number of the parking slot. Parking slot extensions are created dynamically when a call is parked. Any attempt to call these extensions without a call having been parked previously has the same effect as calling a nonexistent extension number.

For example, a small computer software company includes a group of employees who answer support calls to provide first tier support. If an employee cannot answer a question or solve a problem, that person can put the call on hold and one of the technical experts can pick it up. When Mark puts a call on hold for Alice to pick up, the extension number 703, where the call is parked, is announced. Alice can also put the call on hold to return the caller to Mark.
