Understanding SRX Series Integrated Convergence Services Features and Functions
This topic gives a high-level view of Integrated Convergence Services components and features. Integrated Convergence Services optimizes and secures VoIP communication and applications running on Juniper Networks SRX Series Services Gateways. It integrates hardware and software on the SRX210 and SRX240 devices to provide the following main features and functions:
- A standards-based Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) media gateway (SRX Series MGW) that connects VoIP networks to the PSTN so that calls can be made from and routed to local analog telephones, fax machines, and SIP phones configured for the SRX Series MGW.
- The SRX Series survivable call server (SRX Series SCS) that provides local call handling and basic call routing when the SIP peer call server cannot be reached. The SRX Series SCS offers features and functions similar to those provided by the peer call server.
- Emergency call support that allows Integrated Convergence Services to intercept all branch calls whose called number matches that of a configured emergency number, for example 9-1-1. You can dedicate trunks for emergency calls or configure the device to preempt existing calls to guarantee successful emergency call completion. The device routes these calls to a local telephony service provider trunk or to the peer call server.
- Lifeline support to connect an analog phone that is connected to FXS port to FXO1 port (PSTN) in the event of power failure.
- SIP trunking from the branch integrated natively into
the device to provide a secure, robust, and reliable SIP-based solution.
SIP trunk support includes optimized QoS and traffic engineering to
route calls using the shortest path from the branch to the carrier
point-of-presence (POP).
Unlike traditional SIP architectures in which traffic is back-hauled to headquarters, when a local SIP trunk is used, it serves as a circuit switch trunk replacement for TDM or analog PSTN lines from the branch. This solution results in large cost savings with dynamic pricing schemes made available by SIP trunking carriers.
Integrated Convergence Services supports the Open Convergence Architecture and gives you the flexibility to select the SIP call servers, IP phones, and service providers to be used.
