Replacing Connectors to the M10i Routing Engine Interface Ports

To replace the cables that connect external management devices to the Routing Engine, perform the procedures described in the following sections.

Replacing the Management Ethernet Cable on the M10i Routing Engine

To connect the Routing Engine to a network for out-of-band management, connect an Ethernet cable with RJ-45/RJ-45 connectors to the MGMT port on the Routing Engine. One such cable is provided with the router. For cable specifications, see Routing Engine Interface Cable and Wire Specifications for M10i Routers:

To replace the management Ethernet cable:

  1. If a cable is already installed in the MGMT port for the relevant Routing Engine:
    1. Press the tab on the connector and pull the connector straight out of the port. Figure 1 shows the connector.
    2. Disconnect the cable from the network device.
  2. Plug one end of the replacement Ethernet cable into the appropriate MGMT port. Figure 2 shows the external device ports on the CIP. The ports labeled HOST 0 connect to the Routing Engine in the upper Routing Engine slot (RE0), and the ports labeled HOST 1 connect to the Routing Engine in the lower Routing Engine slot (RE1).
  3. Plug the other end of the cable into the network device.

Replacing the Console or Auxiliary Cable on the M10i Routing Engine

To use a system console to configure and manage the Routing Engine, connect it to the appropriate CONSOLE port on the Routing Engine. To use a laptop, modem, or other auxiliary device, connect it to the appropriate AUX port on the Routing Engine. Both ports accept an RS-232 (EIA-232) serial cable with DB-9/DB-9 connectors. One such cable is provided with the router. If you want to connect a device to both ports, you must supply another cable. For cable specifications, see Routing Engine Interface Cable and Wire Specifications for M10i Routers.

To replace a management console or auxiliary device:

  1. If a cable is already installed in the CONSOLE or AUX port:
    1. Turn off the power to the console or auxiliary device.
    2. Unscrew the screws that secure the cable connector to the port, using a 2.5-mm flat-blade screwdriver if necessary.
    3. Pull the cable connector straight out of the port.
    4. Disconnect the cable from the console or auxiliary device.
  2. Plug the female end of the replacement serial cable into the appropriate CONSOLE or AUX port. Figure 4 shows the external device ports on the Routing Engine.
  3. Tighten the screws on the connector, using a 2.5-mm flat-blade screwdriver if necessary.
  4. Power on the auxiliary or console device.
