Removing a Battery from an EX8216 Switch for Recycling
The EX8216 switch contains a CR2032 2.7-volt lithium battery on each Routing Engine (RE) module installed in the chassis. The coin-shaped battery is approximately 0.75-in. (20 mm) in diameter. The battery is estimated to last for over 50 years.
A base configuration switch has one RE module, and a redundant configuration switch has two modules installed. Before recycling an RE module or the switch chassis, remove the battery from each RE module for battery recycling.
Before you begin to remove the battery:
- Power off the switch or take the RE module offline. If only one RE module is installed in a powered-on switch, you must halt the module before removing it. See Taking the RE Module Offline in an EX8216 Switch .
Ensure that you have the following parts and tools available:
- Phillips (+) screwdriver, number 2
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap
To remove the battery from an RE module in the switch (see Figure 1):
- Attach the antistatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to one of the ESD points on the chassis.
- Locate the RE module in the switch chassis.
- With the screwdriver, loosen the captive screws on each side of the RE module by turning them counterclockwise until they are completely unseated.
- Pull both ejector levers outwards, away from the faceplate of the RE module, until they go no further. This action causes the module to slide slightly out of the chassis.
- Grasp the ejector levers, and pull the RE module out to about halfway.
- Place one hand underneath the module to support it, and slide it completely out of the chassis.
- Locate the coin-shaped CR2032 battery on the right side of the module near the third post (see Figure 1).
- With your finger, pry the battery out of its socket.
- If you are recycling the entire chassis of a redundant configuration, repeat StepsĀ 2 through 8 for the second RE module.
- Recycle the battery or batteries as required.
