Power Consumption for an AC-Powered MX960 Router

We recommend that you provision 11 A  @ 240 VAC for each input.

For high capacity power supplies, we recommend that you provision 14 A @ 240 VAC for each input.

If you do not plan to provision as recommended above, you can use the information in Table 1 and Table 2 to calculate the power consumption and thermal output for your hardware configuration.

Table 1 lists the power requirements for base AC-powered routers operating under typical voltage conditions and includes nonredundant and redundant power supply configurations.

Table 1: AC Base Router Power Requirements

AC Power Supply Configuration

Power Requirement (Watts)

Nonredundant AC configuration includes three AC power supplies, the midplane, craft interface, and fan trays (running at normal speed)

471 W (approximate)

Redundant AC configuration includes four AC power supplies, the midplane, craft interface, and fan trays (running at normal speed)

500 W (approximate)

High-Capacity Power Supplies

Nonredundant AC configuration includes two high-capacity AC power supplies, the midplane, craft interface, and high-capacity fan trays (running at normal speed)

588 W (approximate)

Redundant AC configuration includes four high-capacity AC power supplies, the midplane, craft interface, and high-capacity fan trays (running at normal speed)

708 W (approximate)

Table 2 lists the power requirements for various hardware components under typical voltage conditions.

Typical power consumption for AC-powered routers:

  • Power consumption for minimum configuration:
    Base router and three power supplies + 2 SCBs + 1 Routing Engine + 1 DPC—Generalized typical value =471 W + (2)176  W + 106 W + 367  W = 1296 W
  • AC Power consumption for maximum configuration:
    Base router and four power supplies + fan tray at full speed + 2 SCBs + 2 Routing Engines + 11 DPCs—Generalized maximum value = 500 W + 235  W + 2(176 W) + 2(106 W) + 11(429 W) = 500 W + 235 W + 352 W + 212 W + 4719 W = 6018 W
  • Current requirement adjustment for fans running at full speed (high temperature environment or cooling component failure):
    Calculated system current (X) – Cooling (normal) + Cooling (full speed) =X A – 8.3 A + 12.5 A =X A + 4.2 A
  • Example of calculating system thermal output:
    Watts DC * 3.41 = BTU/hr6018 W * 3.41 = 20,521 BTU/hr
