Release Information
Statement introduced in Junos OS Release 17.3R1.
Description
Enable Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) to perform only multicast forwarding. This feature is especially useful in scenarios where IGMP snooping is configured with Ethernet VPN (EVPN) to forward multicast traffic among VLANs in different domains or to external multicast devices. When using PIM in such scenarios, you do not need to configure a rendezvous point (RP) since PIM adjacencies do not need to be formed. When you enable PIM in passive mode, the device treats itself as an RP and uses its loopback address as the RP address. Previously, you had to configure an RP, which might result in route loops.
In passive mode, PIM handles resolve requests and forwards traffic interested outgoing interfaces based on local IGMP learning. Other PIM features that are used to form adjacencies, such as hello messages, are disabled when you configure this statement.
