Mobile Edge Computing Use Cases & Deployment Options

10 Pages712 KB6/1/16
MEC aims to place compute and storage resources in the 4G RAN to improve the delivery of content and applications to end users. The technology enables operators to better adapt traffic to the prevailing radio conditions, optimize service quality, and improve network efficiency. This white paper discusses the benefits of edge computing in mobile networks and investigates the use cases that are deployable in the nearer term. It provides an overview of the MEC architecture and deployment options, and evaluates the longer-term role of MEC in evolved 4G and 5G contexts.

Threat Detection & Security Policy Enforcement: A New Inflection Point in Mobile Security

9 Pages945 KB6/1/16
The latest inflection point in mobile network security consists of large-scale centralization of security policy enabled through more open interfaces driven by SDN. It also consists of greater distribution of threat detection and security enforcement throughout the mobile network enabled by both SDN and NFV. This white paper addresses some of the key aspects of this inflection point in mobile security. It describes general changes in the threat landscape, common principles being applied in evolving all ICT infrastructure, and how these apply in the specific context of the mobile network. It makes the case for centralizing security policy while also distributing threat detection and security policy enforcement throughout the mobile infrastructure. It describes the evolution toward that architecture now, while emphasizing the added impetus that the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G will also bring to executing on these requirements. Finally, it depicts the role of SDN and NFV as enabling technologies in this evolution of the mobile security architecture.

The Security Vulnerabilities of LTE: Risks for Operators

7 Pages991 KB9/1/13
LTE brings powerful cost-saving and revenue-generating features for operators, as well as work-enhancing and life- enhancing capabilities to end users. However, there is a significant new security vulnerability in the LTE network that never existed with 3G networks. Whereas 3G traffic is encrypted at the end-user device and terminated deep in the network, LTE's encryption terminates at the base station, or eNodeB. The fix that the Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) prescribed (that is, the use of IPsec from the eNodeB back into the network) has not been deployed in many of the early LTE launches, but is starting to be introduced now. This introduction has largely been driven by the recognition that allowing cleartext to transit freely across the network exposes subscribers to theft of private information or network outages caused by hackers. This paper identifies security exposures in LTE networks, considers the driving forces behind those that have deployed IPsec and those that have not, and provides an outlook for IPsec adoption over the next few years.

Gi and NFV: Low-Friction Service Selection and Innovation

16 Pages1.10 MB9/1/14
As operators continue to invest in LTE rollouts, they still need to find ways to monetize the previous access-based business models. NFV is a new architectural approach to building and deploying services in the network that can significantly improve agility, flexibility, and scalability. Deploying NFV at the service edge, coupled with a powerful routing platform and packet inspection, allows telecoms operators to create an environment that will foster service innovation. This white paper examines how the service edge can help operators add value to their LTE networks with SDN and NFV.

Enabling Services in the RAN

2 Pages315 KB9/1/15
Two interconnected trends will shape the mobile industry over the next decade: (1) the exponential growth in mobile traffic and (2) the explosion of connected devices—the Internet of Things (IoT). To support these trends in today’s 4G networks and next-generation 5G networks, mobile infrastructures will need to scale effectively and deliver higher volumes of mobile data, especially video. They will also need to provide fast response times to a multitude of mobile devices and tactile Internet applications. Juniper Networks and Saguna have joined forces to bring to market a complete, pre-integrated MEC platform. The combined solution delivers MEC functionality with the underlying system elements required for operation within the demanding radio access network (RAN) environment.

5 Pages252 KB7/1/15
With bandwidth-intensive mobile data traffic and subscriber density constantly increasing, mobile operators face an ongoing capacity problem. Some solutions to this issue include the introduction of the small cell within the heterogeneous network (HetNet) framework, and moving from legacy time-division multiplexing (TDM) transport network infrastructure towards metro Ethernet and seamless IP/MPLS, as well as SDH microwave to faster packet-based millimeter wave wireless links. The use of micro and millimeter waves combined with carrier Ethernet is a necessity, and brings the advantages of capacity, scalability, and flexibility to deliver cost-effective, optimized backhaul networks. This solution brief describes the Juniper Networks and NEC microwave and millimeter wave backhaul solution.
