Creating a Virtualized Instance of CTPView Server on an ESX Server


Before you begin:

  • Make sure that vSphere client is installed on you workstation.


    Within vSphere, there are numerous ways to perform a particular task. The following example illustrates one such method. You can use the procedure that suits your network deployment effectively.

In this example, a CTPView virtual machine is installed with the FC4 OS. This method of installation is one of the most complex installations in a virtualized environment of any of the CTPView releases because of its lack of support for new technologies.

To create a new VM instance of CTPView server on an ESXi Server:

  1. Copy the ISO files you need to the ESXI datastore.



  2. Start the vSphere client and enter the ESXi server IP and your login credentials.
  3. Start the wizard to create a new virtual machine File > New > Virtual Machine.
  4. Choose Configuration as Typical and click Next.
  5. Enter the Name of the VM. For example, you can enter a meanngful, easily-identifiable name such as CTPView FC4 [61] where the number 61 represents the IP address you want to assign to the new VM. Click Next.
  6. Choose the datastore you want to use as datastore1 and click Next
  7. Choose Guest OS and click Next. Make the selections as Linux and Other 2.6.x Linux (32-bit).
  8. Choose the number of NICs as 2 and click Next.
  9. Choose disk size and click Next. Specify a size of 5 GB, which is sufficient storage space for most lab uses.
  10. Select the “Edit the virtual machine settings before completion” check box and press “Enter”
  11. Go to Hardware tab > Memory, and select memory size as 768 MB.
  12. Go to Hardware tab > CPUs, and select sockets and cores. Select 2 sockets and 1 core.
  13. Go to Hardware tab > CD/DVD, select Device Type and the first ISO file needed. Select the “Connect at power on” check box. Select the device type as Datastore ISO File, and the first ISO file as /datastore1/ISO_FILES/CTPView_FC4_2.4R1_071107_PN-010386_CD-1.iso.
  14. For FC4 only => Go to Hardware tab > SCSI Controller. In the “SCI Controller Type” box, click the “Change Type...” button and select “BusLogic Parallel”. This selection creates an IDE drive instead of SCSI and prevent a FC4 kernel panic. Click “OK”.
  15. Click Finish.
  16. Select your new virtual machine in the left panel of vSphere > Inventory as CTPView FC4 [61].
  17. In the “Getting Started” tab, select “Power on the virtual machine”.
  18. Switch to the “Console” tab and click inside the terminal emulator.
  19. At the boot prompt, enter your installation choice. ctpview-install (FC4 uses only a single partition and therefore, this option works on a small disk in the manner in which you have configured)
  20. If multiple ISO files are required, you will be prompted to insert a new disc. You need to load the next ISO file.
  21. Press a combination of the Ctrl and Alt keys to change input focus back to your desktop. Go back to the “Getting Started” tab and select “Edit virtual machine settings”.
  22. Go to Hardware tab > CD/DVD, select the next ISO file using the “Browse” button. Check the “Connected” box under Device Status and press “OK”. /datastore1/ISO_FILES/CTPView_FC4_2.4R1_071107_PN-010386_CD-4.iso
  23. Return to the “Console” tab and click once inside the terminal emulator to change input focus back into it. Then press “Enter” to click the “OK” button.
  24. Repeat this process as many times as is necessary for your particular installation.
  25. Go to Hardware tab > CD/DVD. Now, set the Device Type to “Client Device”, then click OK.
  26. Now return to the Console tab, log in to the console, and use the CLI menu utility to configure parameters, such as the IP address.
