Anchorage Museum Deploys New Secure, Robust Network with Juniper Networks

Integrated routing, switching and security solutions support cutting-edge multimedia exhibits and business applications; lowers total cost of ownership by up to 63 percent

SUNNYVALE, Calif., November 18, 2009 — With the help of Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR), the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center in Alaska has deployed a secure 10 Gbps Ethernet network that provides employees, visitors and researchers with secure, high-speed access to video, voice, business and Web applications. As part of a major, multiyear expansion, the Anchorage Museum enlisted Juniper Networks to provide a seamless, reliable and secure network that could be easily operated with minimal IT staff, lowering its total cost of ownership by up to 63 percent compared to competitive solutions over a five-year period.

“While we may be considered a small business by IT industry standards, we still have the need for an enterprise-quality campus network so that our operations run smoothly,” said Doug Adams, IT director, Anchorage Museum. “With Juniper Networks, not only are we able to deploy a wide range of solutions that meet our specific needs, we also have the benefit of significant cost savings and ease of deployment.  Juniper is now our single network provider that offers the best products from the network edge to the end user.”

Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet switches, featuring Virtual Chassis technology, form the network core, with Juniper Networks EX3200 Ethernet switches in the access layer. The core is a 10 Gbps metro Ethernet fiber ring that supports the museum’s virtualized server and storage environment. Juniper Networks J Series Services Routers are employed as border routers. The primary Internet connection is made through a Juniper Networks J2300 Services Router, which is also protected by Juniper Networks SSG Series Secure Services Gateways and delivers high-performance security.

The EX4200 line of Ethernet switches provides high-speed, carrier-class performance in a compact form factor. Virtual Chassis technology enables up to 10 EX4200 switches to be interconnected and operate as a single logical device, reducing management overhead and operational expenses.  The EX4200 switches also include high availability features such as redundant, hot-swappable internal power supplies and field-replaceable, multi-blower fan trays to ensure maximum uptime.

The single rack-unit EX4200 and EX3200 switches are easy to deploy and manage, and both are powered by the field-proven Juniper Networks Junos® software, which delivers operational efficiency across Juniper switch and router products.

Juniper Networks J Series Services Routers deliver reliable connectivity with a powerful blend of high-performance networks and advanced services. J Series routers also leverage the modular Junos software and consolidate security, application optimization, and voice capabilities on a single, easy-to-manage platform.

Additionally, the Anchorage Museum replaced its IPsec VPN client software solution on devices with Juniper Networks SA Series SSL VPN Appliances, so employees have secure anywhere, anytime access to corporate resources from any device with a Web browser. The SSL VPN plays a vital role in allowing public remote access for users to the network.

“We’re seeing more demand from small-to-medium-sized businesses for the types of solutions more commonly seen in large enterprises,” said Mark Bauhaus, executive vice president and general manager, Service Layer Technology Business Group at Juniper Networks. “Our solutions are designed to be robust and scalable to meet the demands of even the most complex and demanding secure environments, including the Anchorage Museum which relies on a defense-in-depth design for the network that helps address the needs of employees and visitors alike.”
