Japanese Research and Development Agency Enters New Generation of Networking with Juniper Core Virtualization Solution

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology Achieves Virtualization of JGN2plus with Juniper Networks T1600 and JCS 1200

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 7, 2009 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced that Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has achieved a major technological breakthrough by using virtualization to improve the efficiency of its new-generation ultra high-speed test bed research network, JGN2plus, with Juniper's T1600 core routing platform and JCS 1200 control system. Juniper Networks provided NICT with the technology to build virtualized core routers, which can increase the flexibility, efficiency and performance of its network.

"We built a highly reliable virtualized core network that enabled us to increase efficiency and flexibility," said Professor Kazumasa Kobayashi, Operation Leader for JGN2plus. "When implementing virtualization, it is critical to maintain router independence, especially in test-bed networks such as JGN2plus, and the Juniper Networks JCS 1200 and T1600 enable us to create virtualized routers that maintain the appropriate levels of administrative and service-specific separation while still recognizing the significant efficiency and cost-savings benefits of virtualization."

At the 2009 Sapporo Snow Festival, the JGN2plus research and education network was used to distribute live television and data feeds in HD format between the Festival studio and six broadcasting stations nationwide, as well as to home digital TVs, via the Panasonic Center in Tokyo.

National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) is the sole national research institution in Japan in the information and communications field. NICT is striving to advance the fields, by promoting its own R&D centers (especially, "ICT for Safety and Security," "New Generation Networks" and "Universal Communications" fields) and by cooperating with supporting outside parties. NICT has been operating JGN2plus, its super high-speed and high performance test-bed network, since April 2008.

Juniper's T1600 multi-terabit core router enables service providers to increase network capacity in line with escalating service demands without adding incremental systems to the network so that they can speed new service deployment, deliver a superior end-user experience and maximize their existing T-series investments. With interface speeds from 10 GE to 100 GE, the T1600 can deliver 1.6 Tbps capacity with 40 percent less power consumption compared to competitive platforms. With over 5,000 platforms shipped to more than 220 customers worldwide, the T-series is the industry's most proven, scalable, feature-rich and flexible core routing platform with the scale, performance, reliability and security required by the world's most demanding IP networks.

The JCS1200 is an innovative system for scaling the control plane of routers and allowing the clean partitioning of services or network elements. JCS1200 enables unprecedented levels of scalability in a consolidated routing platform, while at the same time reducing the expenses associated with implementing and operating a multiservice network. In addition, JCS1200 allows increased control of services, rapid service enablement and high operational efficiency. All Juniper Networks T-series routers as well as the JCS 1200 run on JUNOS® Software, a single source operating system that enables consistent operations, network scale without disruption, and unprecedented interoperability and service agility.

"Juniper's virtualized core routing solution translates into more efficient, flexible, and powerful networks that service providers can leverage for innovative, revenue-generating services," said Matt Kolon, CTO, APAC, Juniper Networks. "NICT's deployment of the JCS 1200 and T1600 is a powerful testament to the possibilities virtualization can bring to core networks."
