Juniper Networks Announces General Availability of EX8216 Ethernet Switch, Purpose-built for High-Performance Cloud Computing Environments

German-based Research Organization Deploys Modular Switch for Low Latency, Scalable Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 12, 2009 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced the availability of the EX8216 Ethernet switch, a 16-slot high-performance platform with switch fabric capacity of up to 12.4 terabits optimized for today's high-density 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) data center and cloud computing environments. The EX8216 switch is a member of the EX8200 line of modular switches, purpose-built to deliver the wire-rate performance, low latency and carrier-class reliability that enable businesses to consolidate network layers and reduce capital and operational expenses across the infrastructure.

The EX8200 line, which also includes the eight-slot EX8208, delivers an industry-leading combination of port density, power efficiency and scalability that cloud computing environments require to support next-generation Web 2.0 applications. With a per-slot capacity of 320 Gbps and delivering up to two billion packets per second (pps) performance, the EX8200 line of switches offer a built-in migration path to 100 GbE, providing businesses with the scalability they require to future-proof their networks.

Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, one of the world's foremost applied research organizations with a reputation for innovation in its thinking and structure, is one of the first customers to deploy the EX8200 line of switches in their production network.

"To remain in step with the changing needs of our industrial clients, we have to ensure that the network infrastructure underpinning our activity is as flexible, scalable and responsive as we are," said Andreas Abele, IT manager of Fraunhofer Gesellschaft. "We have deployed the EX8200 line of Ethernet switches from Juniper Networks because they help to create a data center environment that is efficient, streamlined and highly cost-effective."

Complete Portfolio of High-Performance Ethernet Switches

The EX Series Ethernet Switches, which include the upcoming EX2200 and the EX2500, EX3200 and EX4200 lines in addition to the EX8200 line, advance the economics of networking by enabling a high-performance network infrastructure based on three key tenets — operational simplicity, carrier-class reliability and integrated security — that deliver ubiquitous access, reduce network downtime and enhance overall security to shared assets across the extended enterprise. For more information on the EX Series Ethernet Switches, please visit www.juniper.net/switch.

"The new EX8216 switch can deliver twice the performance while consuming one-third less power and one-sixth less space than the leading competitor," said Hitesh Sheth, executive vice president and general manager of the Ethernet Platforms Business Group at Juniper Networks. "With the rest of Juniper's portfolio, the EX8216 enables new data center and cloud computing architectures that lower complexity, deliver increased functionality and reduce overall total cost of ownership through innovative system designs that can lower both capital and operating expenses."

JUNOS® Software Reduces Complexity, Increases Resiliency and Lowers TCO

The EX Series along with many Juniper routers and its security services gateways run on JUNOS Software, which delivers unmatched carrier-class reliability and operational simplicity. A study conducted by Forrester Consulting, Inc. (NASDAQ: FORR) in February 2009 reported that companies that use JUNOS achieved a 41 percent reduction in overall network operations costs across specific tasks such as planning, deploying and provisioning of resources. For additional study results, see "Independent Study Shows TCO Improvements with JUNOS Implementation."

In addition, Juniper's Network and Security Manager (NSM) provides a unified device management solution for the EX Series, as well as Juniper routers and security devices.
