General Dynamics Taps Juniper Networks for On-the-Move Communications in U.S. Army WIN-T Program

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 27, 2009 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) the leader in high-performance networking, today announced that it is providing network routing hardware, software, technological expertise and engineering support to General Dynamics C4 Systems, the prime contractor developing the U.S. Army's Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) program. WIN-T is the U.S. Army's fully mobile, tactical communications network system, designed to provide reliable, secure and seamless video, data, imagery and voice services that enable decisive, on-the-move (OTM) information sharing among deployed forces.

As the Army's tactical portion of the Global Information Grid (GIG), WIN-T will enable deployed forces to collaborate with GIG services and capabilities (databases, collectors, and national agencies) to increase information-enabled operations. WIN-T will use high-bandwidth radio systems with ground-ground, ground-air and satellite OTM capabilities, as well as robust network management to keep mobile forces connected, communicating and synchronized.

Juniper has been working with the General Dynamics WIN-T program team on integrating Juniper router technology into a solution that supports the WIN-T program's need for Increment 2 OTM communications between commanders, staff, and functional units via line-of-sight, satellite, air-to-ground, and ground-to-ground networks. Juniper's collaboration with General Dynamics has included the definition of interfaces between routers and radios necessary to support OTM functionality that will enable secure network access for defense personnel and their IP-related assets (live video, voice, data and other transmissions) in real time as they move from one operational theater to another.

"Juniper's proven, high-performance networking solutions have met WIN-T requirements for standards-based solutions in a very demanding, tactical environment," said Bob Fortna, Juniper Networks vice president, Defense Sector. "Juniper routers are helping to ensure that highly reliable, secure and extensible networks are delivering the right information, at the right time, while supporting full interoperability among current, Joint, Allied, Coalition, DISN and public networks."

Juniper's design approach to WIN-T includes best-in-class router technology, firewalls and intrusion prevention system solutions. "Juniper technology is increasing network throughput and security, while significantly reducing the footprint and power requirements of high-performance routing solutions," said Craig Bardenheuer, Juniper Networks vice president, Open IP Business. "As a single network operating system, JUNOS® Software is an essential enabler of an integrated approach to routing and security. By embedding network security solutions into our industry-leading routers, Juniper helps ensure the reliability and future scalability of the WIN-T network."

Juniper's work with General Dynamics on WIN-T further extends the use of Juniper solutions throughout the GIG. Since 2003, Juniper has provided edge and core IP/MPLS routers for the DISA GIG Bandwidth Expansion (GIG-BE) program, now known as the Defense Information Systems Network (DISN) Core.
