Japanese Service Provider Increases Performance and Lowers Power Consumption with Juniper Networks Ethernet Services Routers

Internet Initiative Japan Capitalizes on Efficiency of MX-series while Expanding Capacity of High-Performance Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif., November 4, 2008 -- Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced that Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) has deployed MX-series Ethernet Services Routers to enhance network performance, reliability and service versatility in addition to addressing power supply and space constraints. By upgrading its legacy infrastructure with MX960 and MX480 routers, IIJ scaled its network capacity to manage growing Ethernet traffic—which doubled in the past year—without overloading electrical resources at the company's site.

"Juniper Networks helped us overcome our topmost challenge of limited on-site power for our backbone router facility," said Junichi Shimagami, director, network services, IIJ. "We are concerned about both electrical power capacity and rack space, so it was not feasible to simply add more routers in order to handle increased traffic demands. With the MX-series, Juniper Networks met our goal of controlling network costs without sacrificing the high-quality services that have earned the loyalty of our customers."

Founded in 1992, IIJ is one of Japan's leading Internet access and network solutions providers, catering mainly to large enterprise customers. IIJ has used Juniper Networks M- and T-series routers in its core IP network for several years and by expanding its Ethernet infrastructure with the MX-series will be able to leverage the proven, consistent JUNOS® software across multiple portions of its network—dramatically reducing operational costs and complexity.

The MX960 Ethernet Services Router is one of the industry's largest-capacity carrier Ethernet platforms, with up to 960 Gbps of switching and routing capacity. The MX-series reduces costs, enables more revenue per platform and can scale to protect customers' investments. Offering efficient support of high-density interfaces in a range of efficient, high-performance hardware platforms, the MX-series supports a wide range of business and residential applications and services, including high-speed transport and VPN services, next-generation broadband multiplay services and high-volume Internet data center internetworking.

"Power supply limitations are fast becoming a bottleneck for power-hungry networks and data centers," said Masanori Osuga, vice president of Japan for Juniper Networks. "IIJ's deployment of the MX-series demonstrates the priority now being given to efficient performance in the design of the networks being built in Japan and worldwide. Improving energy efficiency is a key part of monetizing the network by reducing operating costs while speeding service delivery."

JUNOS® software is a single operating system running routing, switching and security platforms from Juniper Networks. JUNOS software delivers the power of one operating system—reducing complexity and driving operational excellence—to lower the cost of innovation. The single operating environment of JUNOS software offers efficient and scalable IP networking to reduce total cost of ownership while expanding network intelligence for new service delivery.
