Juniper Networks Helps Advance Energy Efficiency in Networking Industry

T1600 Core Router First System to be Tested under New Energy Consumption Rating Guidelines

SUNNYVALE, Calif., October 28, 2008 -- Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced that its T1600 core router has successfully completed testing using the methodology of the new Energy Consumption Rating (ECR) Initiative, a framework for measuring the energy efficiency of network and telecom devices launched today by Ixia (NASDAQ: XXIA) and Juniper Networks. After undergoing the comprehensive ECR testing, the T1600 has been verified as the industry's most energy-efficient core router, with a performance-per-energy unit rating of 9.1 watts per Gpbs. The tests were performed at Ixia's iSimCity in Santa Clara, California using its IxGreen energy measurement solution.

"As we seek to improve network performance and meet our commitment to protect the environment, energy efficiency is a key consideration for NTT America, so it is encouraging to see equipment providers working together to create and define standards in this area," said Kazuhiro Gomi, CTO of NTT America and vice president of the NTT Com Global IP Network. "Efficiency was also part of the reason NTT America selected Juniper's T1600 core router, which enabled us to cut power consumption by as much as 20 percent, while doubling the network capacity without any increase in datacenter space requirements."

Another example of Juniper's commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction both in its products and its internal operations, the ECR was developed in collaboration between Juniper Networks, Ixia and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, and is an open initiative that welcomes participants and users from network equipment manufacturers, government agencies, carriers and enterprises. The ECR has developed a vendor-neutral energy efficiency metric that creates a common energy denominator between different network and telecom systems. The ECR methodology defines the procedures and conditions for measurements and calculations, and can be readily implemented with industry-standard test equipment.

"Energy efficiency is an increasingly important factor in customers' decision and evaluation process, but to-date there has been no reliable, standardized method for testing the efficiency of networking equipment," said Opher Kahane, senior vice president and general manager, High End Systems Business Unit, Juniper Networks. "By participating in the launch of the ECR Initiative, Juniper is not only helping advance the industry towards its efficiency goals, but is also validating the advantage Juniper's platforms such as the T1600 have in this area."

"Network equipment vendors and their customers need to measure energy consumption with consistent, industry-accepted measurements and the ECR Initiative is an essential step," said Atul Bhatnagar, president and CEO of Ixia. "We've designed IxGreen to utilize the ECR specification to provide the repeatable, reliable, standards-based measurement required to become an industry standard."

Juniper Networks T1600 is a core router that can deliver 25 percent more routing capacity at half the footprint and with up to 40 percent less power than competing solutions. The T1600 multi-terabit core router enables service providers to increase network capacity in line with escalating service demands without adding incremental systems to the network so that they can speed new service deployment, deliver a superior end-user experience and maximize their existing T-series investments. The T1600 and all Juniper Networks T-series routers run on JUNOS software, a single source operating system that enables consistent operations, network scale without disruption, and unprecedented interoperability and service agility. Juniper has shipped more than 4,000 T-series to over 200 customers worldwide.

About the ECR Initiative

The ECR is an open initiative that welcomes participants and users from network equipment manufacturers, government agencies, carriers, and enterprises. It is immediately applicable to establish the relative energy efficiency of network components produced by different manufacturers within a solid, unified and vendor-neutral test methodology. The ECR specification and additional details are available at the ECR Initiative's web site. The specification is free to the public and unlocks the potential of the minimum-resource network design, where the energy footprint is reduced in parallel with meeting and exceeding the operational objectives.
