Japanese University Links to Next-Generation Nationwide Network with Juniper Networks High-Performance Network Infrastructure

University of Tsukuba Deploys M120 Router and ISG 2000 Security Appliance to Ensure Fast, Reliable and Secure Access to Advanced IP Services

TOKYO, December 5, 2007 -- Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced that Japan's University of Tsukuba has connected to Japan's nationwide SINET3 research and education (R&E) network with the Juniper Networks M120 multiservice edge router and Integrated Security Gateway (ISG) 2000 security appliance. The Juniper network infrastructure upgrades the University's campus connectivity to external networks with support for advanced IP services, more robust network security and 10 Gigabit Ethernet speeds.

The SINET3 infrastructure, using Juniper Networks T-series core routers, connects more than 700 universities and R&E institutions throughout Japan and links the country's R&E community with the rest of the world.

"We are ensuring student and faculty access to a wide range of advanced IP services through SINET3," said Satoshi Sato, Associate Professor for the University of Tsukuba's Academic Media Center. "These bandwidth intensive network applications include video conferencing, supercomputing access, collaborative applications and other latency-sensitive, realtime traffic. The M120's performance, reliability and scale ensure 'no-compromise' high-performance and features, while the ISG 2000 provides robust and scalable security."

The Juniper Networks ISG 2000 is a purpose-built, high-performance integrated security gateway that provides unmatched firewall and IPSec VPN performance for the latest Internet applications and multimedia content. Since deployment, the University has enjoyed faster network throughout and support for IPv6, which are criteria for connecting to SINET3. The ISG 2000 was also selected for its flexibility and reliability, including upgradability to include full intrusion detection and prevention (IDP) capabilities through an optional add-on card.

The Juniper Networks M120 router was selected for its high-performance, superior reliability and comprehensive support of both IPv4 and IPv6. With the M120's ability to deliver multicast IPv6 services while serving as a core router, the University will be able to deliver advanced services to its students and researchers efficiently and cost-effectively. The Juniper Networks M-series uses a hardware-based approach combined with the highly scalable, secure and reliable JUNOS TM software, which enables multiple services to run concurrently on a single IP/MPLS platform.

"Research and education institutions such as the University of Tsukuba depend on the network to accelerate delivery of intelligence and resources to its constituents," said Masanori Osuga, vice president of Japan for Juniper Networks. "In order to drive their success, a high-performance network capable of providing fast, reliable and secure access in a distributed environment is critical. We are pleased that our routing and security solutions underpin many of these networks, including SINET3 itself, to ensure speed and security in higher learning environments."
