Japanese University Reinforces Network Security with Juniper Networks

Kyoto University Secures with the Collaborative Communications and Research of more than 20,000 Users Each Day with Juniper's Intrusion Detection and Prevention Solution

SUNNYVALE, Calif., October 10, 2007 – Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced that Kyoto University has mitigated its risk of exposure to known and not-yet discovered security threats with the deployment of the Juniper Networks Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) solution. This deployment has helped Kyoto University cost-effectively accommodate its growing volume of network traffic without sacrificing security or performance. Juniper's IDP solution helps more than 20,000 researchers, students and faculty to leverage the university's high-performance network to safely and efficiently conduct daily activities.

"The Kyoto University network is connected to various academic networks, including the SINET3 infrastructure which requires gigabit throughput from security devices," said Dr. Hiroki Takakura, Associate Professor, Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies (ACCMS) of Kyoto University. "Juniper's IDP 1100F not only enables us to reach this level of performance, handling over a million sessions per day, but also provides vital diagnostic and logging data before and after attacks so that we have more accurate and granular visibility into our network."

"Juniper has supported the security and network performance needs of Kyoto University for more than three years now. Previously we deployed a Juniper IDP platform to compensate for the shortcomings of Intrusion Prevention equipment from another vendor," added Dr. Takakura. "Over the years, our growing student body and evolving network applications have required incremental system upgrades. It was an easy decision to stay with Juniper through our migration to a higher capacity solution."

Juniper's family of high-performance IDP products provides zero-day protection against worms, trojans, spyware, keyloggers and other malware, helping to prevent these attacks from penetrating corporate network and spreading throughout an organization. The Juniper IDP devices identify and stop network and application-level attacks before they inflict damage, minimizing the time and costs associated with intrusions. In addition to protecting networks against attacks, Juniper's IDP products provide information about rogue servers, as well as types and versions of applications and operating systems that may have unknowingly been added to the network. Combined with a granular level of control, administrators can not only control access to specific applications, but can also ensure business critical applications receive a predictable quality of service.

"The network is critical to the daily activities of today's research and educational institutions," said Masanori Osuga, vice president of Japan for Juniper Networks. "As centers of learning, universities increasingly depend on a secure communications infrastructure to enable broad collaboration. Students and faculty alike continue to demand fast, reliable and secure access to applications and services running on a single network for a wide range of learning and administrative tasks. Juniper's high-performance network infrastructure, including our IDP platforms, provides comprehensive protection without compromising performance while controlling overall IT costs."
