Juniper Networks Fortifies Network Security Portfolio; New Software Optimizes Network Traffic and Mitigates Security Risk

Latest Releases Provide Enterprises with Unparalleled Visibility and Control of Applications and Users Across the Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 30, 2007 – Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) today announced the immediate availability of the Juniper Networks ScreenOS version 6.0 operating system for the Integrated Security Gateway (ISG) and Secure Services Gateway (SSG) firewall/VPNs and new Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) version 4.1 software for the IDP products. The latest releases provide enterprises with advanced granular visibility and control of business applications and users, enabling them to set and enforce security policies across the network and enhance application delivery and performance to improve user productivity and to keep pace with escalating business requirements.

As business trends such as the dynamic perimeter, virtual enterprises, and deployment of content-rich and collaborative applications gain broader acceptance, enterprises are increasingly recognizing a direct correlation between network performance and business performance. These trends are also driving escalating demands for securing, optimizing and having visibility and control of applications across the network. To date, most offerings have only addressed this issue by having Layer 3-4 visibility in a network or embedding partial application visibility into a single location or device on the network, not embedding Layer 7 intelligence and visibility across the entire network infrastructure. Juniper is addressing these challenges through its new ScreenOS and IDP capabilities to deliver a comprehensive view of the network that enables enterprises to create a responsive and trusted environment for accelerating the deployment of applications and services while simultaneously maximizing their existing Juniper Networks infrastructure investments.

"This is the next big step in the enterprise security market. Until now, networking and security administrators have only had a partial view of the traffic and users traversing in and out of their network," said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst, Infonetics Research. "With application and user visibility, administrators can do a much better job of identifying and stopping today's threats and controlling application and network usage overall."

"The growing pressure to maintain security for existing and new applications running on our network is on the rise, while at the same time, we are required to allow employee access to business critical information to ensure productivity. To-date, there has not been an effective way to do this simultaneously," said Spartaco Cicerchia, manager of Network Infrastructure, Howard Hughes Medical Institute. "With our current Juniper Networks deployment, through these new simple software enhancements, our company is now able to achieve the level of user and application visibility and control needed to enforce policies and better protect our network."

Granular Visibility and Control of Business Applications and Users

With a proven track record in network security and high-end enterprise routing, Juniper Networks is the first to provide advanced granular user and application visibility and control across the network with integrated security and routing platforms. The new ScreenOS 6.0 real-time, security-specific operating system for the Juniper Networks integrated firewall/VPN/IPS platforms and the new IDP 4.1 software provides expanded user- and application-layer visibility for a comprehensive view and control of the content and users traversing the network. The ISG firewall/VPN with integrated IDP services now includes extended security through application profiling of user traffic and intelligent network delivery through application-layer Quality of Service (QoS). IDP 4.1 takes the next step by leveraging application identification to enable application policy control of the network traffic.

"Juniper has been committed to delivering best-in-class, standalone products and integrated, secure network solutions and now offers customers the ability to leverage their existing infrastructure and save operational costs through a simple software upgrade," said Hitesh Sheth, vice president of Service Layer Technologies, Juniper Networks. "Our latest software capabilities increase network performance while creating a responsive and trusted environment that accelerates the deployment of services and applications over a single network; thereby resulting in high-performance networks that can enable high-performance businesses, helping our customers achieve a sustainable advantage."

Infusing Application and User Intelligence into the Network

Juniper continues its commitment to offer a high-performance application-aware network infrastructure that delivers core networking functionality with the highest performance and reliability via the continual enhancement of its products and solutions in the future. As with the releases announced today, in the future, this will continue to be done in a way that seeks to maximize customers' investments ? and does not require a costly forklift upgrade in every enterprise location to perform these functions.

For example, Juniper Networks is developing the ability to extend the coordinated threat control capability that exists today, with remote and extranet users, to users throughout the network. Coordinated threat control utilizes user, application, device and location identity along with the intrusion prevention intelligence capabilities to effectively provide best-in-class application QoS, dynamic threat mitigation and network performance optimization. By utilizing these application and user intelligence capabilities, and converging multiple best-in-class technologies, enterprises will be able to move towards new levels of business performance while managing risk and reducing costs.
