Juniper Networks Routers Deployed for Core of Yamanashi Information Highway

M-series Routers Enable Local Japanese Government to Create Next-Generation Backbone Consolidating Video and Data Networks throughout Region

SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 16, 2006 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) today announced that the Yamanashi Prefecture region of Japan has deployed Juniper Networks M-series multiservice routers to help create the Yamanashi Information Highway, a next generation communications backbone which connects local government offices, cable television providers, banks and other businesses within the region. The Yamanashi Information Highway, deployed in July 2006, consolidates all data communications and broadcasting networks on a single, converged IP/MPLS network, and leverages the JUNOS operating system to create a customizable management interface for connected institutions.

"We have been working to respond to the local government requirements to build a local information network for the last few years. One of the objectives of the Yamanashi Information Highway is to provide a community of 1 million people with a network of local government offices. We chose to deploy MPLS-VPN technology as we think it is the best choice for a high speed network infrastructure because of its reliability, flexibility, and its ability to integrate disparate networks such as educational, banking, and other enterprises within a single infrastructure," said Mr. Hajime Kasai, Planning Manager, Yamanashi Prefecture. "There are also many cable TV stations which cover the areas hard to reach with analogue broadcasting, and in the future, we expect to use this network not only for data communications but also for video distribution. We are evolving away from the traditional broadcast models; the point-to-multipoint label switched path feature of the Juniper platforms is especially critical in enabling intelligent distribution of real-time video and other high performance traffic on the network. This is one of the main reasons we chose JUNOS and the M-series. With the unique capability of JUNOScript, which supports XML platforms, we are developing management tools to enable local enterprises to customize their network services."

The Yamanashi Prefecture is one of Japan's 47 sub-national governmental jurisdictions, and is located near the center of the main island of Japan, covering an area of 1,724 square miles and consisting of approximately 890,000 residents.

The Juniper Networks M-series multiservice routing platform is an ideal routing solution for network backbones requiring reliable, secure and high-performance IP WAN connectivity, Internet access and services. The M-series delivers robust multicast support, including point-to-multipoint IP/MPLS broadcasting, to support efficient and reliable delivery of high-value video content. Using a high performance architecture and the JUNOS operating system, the M-series ensures high reliability with uncompromising forwarding performance for latency-sensitive applications such as voice, video, and mission-critical data that the Yamanashi Information Highway will be carrying.

"The Yamanashi Prefecture has deployed a truly advanced next-generation network that can support a wide variety of communications and entertainment distribution within the region, and the M-series and JUNOS deliver the scalability, performance and flexibility Yamanashi requires to continue to reliably support the region's communications needs for many years to come," said Masanori Osuga, vice president of Japan for Juniper Networks. "This exciting project is a microcosm of the greater possibilities when entire communities are connected via an agile, open and customizable IP infrastructure and we are proud to be part of this major infrastructure initiative within the Yamanashi region."
