'IPv6 Best Practices World Report' Series Launched to Provide In-depth Guidance for Transitioning Federal Agencies to IPv6

First Report Available to Assist Government in Initial Planning Efforts

SUNNYVALE, Calif., December 8, 2005 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) today announced the launch of its IPv6 Best Practices World Report series and the availability of the first report, A Guide for Federal Agencies Transitioning to IPv6. The report is the first of its kind to provide a comprehensive set of best practices, program management models, workflow processes, and resources to guide federal agencies in their IPv6 transition efforts. The report is intended to assist the federal government's IPv6 migration as mandated in the August 2, 2005 memorandum from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

The report is written by the IPv6 Summit, Inc., a subsidiary of Innofone.com (NASDAQ: INFN), in collaboration with Juniper Networks. It includes recommended IPv6 transitional approaches, experiences, lessons learned and interviews with private and public sector organizations around the world that are recognized leaders in IPv6. Organizations contributing to the report include government civilian and defense agencies, research and development networks, and private industry.

"As a leader in IPv6 technologies and solutions, we recognize that we have a critical role to play in working with the federal government to help support a smooth IPv6 transition," said Thomas Kreidler, vice president of Juniper Federal Systems at Juniper Networks. "This report demonstrates our continued commitment to providing IT decision makers the critical insight and tools required to take the next steps in the transition process."

Noting the aggressive schedule that the OMB memo set forth for the IPv6 transition, the report suggests that a centralized approach is essential for avoiding problems caused by divergent transition approaches, interoperability issues and associated costs from transition failures. Key recommendations include defining metrics to measure progress during and across states of transition, and developing a business case that provides the quantitative and qualitative foundation for transitioning to IPv6. For these and a full range of other best practices based on real world IPv6 transition experiences, the report structures the information to meet the needs of the agency CIO, IPv6 transition lead and supporting transition staff. The report:

  • Quantifies lessons learned by those who have made the transition
  • Synthesizes input from IPv6 leaders in government and the private sector
  • Identifies success factors and recommends specific approaches
  • Integrates all of this information into a format designed to support federal CIOs and IPv6 transition officers in their planning efforts

"We need a better and smarter relationship between leading IT companies and IPv6 government leaders to meet DOD and OMB IPv6 mandates by the 2008 deadline," said Alex Lightman, CEO of the U.S. IPv6 Summit. "Juniper is the only IPv6 leader that I know of that has put forth its own resources to support research into best practices, and to make it freely available to federal CIOs. By taking these important steps forward on behalf of the U.S. government, Juniper Networks has also set the bar for industry IPv6 support. If other companies invest in research and share it as we are doing here, we can boost America's standing in the world race for IPv6 leadership."

This report is the first in a series of best practices reports expected to be published by the IPv6 Summit in collaboration with Juniper Networks. The Executive Summary of the report can be downloaded at www.juniper.net/federal/IPv6. A full copy of the report can also be requested from this site; however the full report will only be made available to government agencies.
