Access One Selects Lucent Technologies and Juniper Networks to Enable Next-Generation Voice and Data Services

Lucent and Juniper Networks solution enables Access One to offer advanced voice services for customers in Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco

MURRAY HILL, N.J., Sep. 19, 2005 - Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) and Juniper Networks (NASDAQ: JNPR) today announced that they have been selected by Access One, Inc., an integrated communications service provider, to provide a complete end-to-end TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solution, including technology from Lucent's AccelerateTM Next Generation Communications Solutions portfolio, that will enable the provider to deliver advanced integrated services to its small, medium, and large business customers.

Lucent's solution will provide Access One with a facilities-based network platform that will enable them to offer next-generation VoIP services, while maintaining the ability to provide traditional telephone service.

Access One will deploy the Lucent Compact Switch and Juniper Networks M7i multiservice routers in its Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco service areas. Lucent Worldwide Services will provide engineering services, installation, integration and maintenance for Access One.

"Access One is on track to migrate from dependency on the ILECs (incumbent local exchange carriers) and a reseller business model to a facilities-based network platform with the installation of a VoIP softswitch and multiservice routers," said Bill Major, director of network services for Access One. "The Lucent Compact Switch will be the key network gateway component for our new TDM and IP-based architecture, which we expect to be commercially available in Chicago by November of this year."

The migration to a facilities-based network platform and implementation of a VoIP softswitch enables Access One to simultaneously support legacy POTS (plain old telephone services) subscribers and new VoIP customers.

"Lucent presented us with a solution that allows us to offer a variety of exciting new next-generation services to both our existing and new customers, while still maintaining the economical rate structures we pride ourselves on," said Jonathan Mitchell, vice president of operations for Access One. "Additionally, owning our own equipment will allow the opportunity to decrease our operating costs and increase revenues without sacrificing quality."

The Lucent Compact Switch also can serve as a building block for carriers that choose to migrate to an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based network to offer blended lifestyle services. "Access One customers can now benefit from the value of a combined Lucent and Juniper Networks solution at enables new them to offer advanced services offerings, while also remaining competitive," said Gerry Cafaro, vice president of sales for Lucent Technologies.

"The integrated solutions from Lucent and Juniper Networks enables Access One to transform its network to an IP/MPLS-based infrastructure with end-to-end high performance and assurance for supporting business-critical applications such as Voice over IP," said Karen Livoli, director of solutions marketing, Juniper Networks. "The delivery of new Layer 2 and Layer 3 revenue-generating services on a unified IP/MPLS infrastructure can help reduce both Capex and Opex."

Offering enhanced security, reliability and advanced services, the M7i multiservice routers are ideal for providers transforming their legacy edge infrastructure and upgrade to a more scalable, feature-rich solution.

The Lucent switch can support from as few as 1,000 subscribers to more than 100,000 subscribers on a single integrated platform. Service providers can deploy the switch for end-office (Class 5) and tandem (Class 4) applications to replace an existing switch or as an addition to the network. In addition to providing VoIP, Internet off-load and gateway mobile switching center features, the compact switch also offers CALEA and E911 capabilities.
