European Community's Financial Institution Implements SSL VPN Access Security Solution from Juniper Networks
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 5, 2004 Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that the European Investment Bank has deployed its Secure Sockets Layer Virtual Private Network (SSL VPN) solution to enable secure access to the bank's corporate network. The European Investment Bank is a financing institution, with capital contributed by the member states of the European Community and which funds a wide spectrum of projects around the world on a non-profit basis. The organization's headquarters are in Luxembourg, with numerous branch offices within and outside Europe. A high number of employees regularly require remote access to the network, including teleworkers, travelers and those based in the branch offices. The European Investment Bank encourages the use of the public Internet for remote network connection because of its low cost in comparison to private network links, but, as a result, has become increasingly concerned about the security risk to its core network resources.
The European Investment Bank acknowledged its need for a secure access solution, but wanted to avoid a per-user client software-based product that would create management issues and would also be very expensive to deploy. The Juniper Networks NetScreen Secure Access SSL VPN products, which are browser-based, are easy to scale and manage, highly cost-effective and feature-rich, and provide full coverage of the European Investment Bank's list of requirements. Depending on the security status of the user's remote laptop, the European Investment Bank can provide differentiated access to its applications and data via the Internet without compromising the network. Remote access to business applications is currently offered. Within six months of rolling out this deployment, the bank expects a substantial reduction in private network use, delivering significant cost savings for the organization.
The deployment at the European Investment Bank consists of a Juniper Networks NetScreen Secure Access 3030 cluster pair of appliances, which act as a gateway to a server-based, customized portal page. This portal directs authenticated remote users to the appropriate network resources. The Juniper Networks solution currently supports up to 250 concurrent SSL VPN user sessions, with the ability to scale up to much larger user counts in line with future business growth, ensuring that the European Investment Bank's remote users have reliable, secure access on demand.
