Chinese Broadcaster Transforms Fiber Network with Juniper Networks
Yuanshen Broadcasting Network Deploys E- and M-series Routing Platforms to Deliver Broadband Services
SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 9, 2004 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that China's Yuanshen Broadcasting Network, located in the northern city of Harbin, will transform its network with E- and M-series routing platforms. The broadcaster will use the Juniper Networks platforms to leverage its existing fiber network for delivering new revenue-generating broadband access services to residential customers and enterprises.
"Historically, our primary focus has been to sell commodity bandwidth and we've generated our revenue by selling access to our fiber resources. Our new business model based on Juniper Networks routing platforms will enable us to generate much more value from our capital resources," said an executive of Yuanshen Broadcasting.
Yuanshen Broadcasting is using the M-series to create a backbone network and the E-series to build an aggregation and access network at the edge. When the project is completed, the broadcaster will be able to not only provide broadband access services to customers, but will have greater control and flexibility in how it charges for the services. For example, Yuanshen Broadcasting will be able to charge for services based on traffic amount and time of day, as well as offering special rates for popular value-added services such as online gaming.
Yuanshen Broadcasting will also be able to offer more sophisticated, MPLS-based services tailored to enterprise customers, such as MPLS VPN, which will bring the emerging carrier additional revenue.
"When it is completed, the new network will let Yuanshen Broadcasting compete with the big players in China's network services market such as CNC and China Telecom, and it will demonstrate what Chinese cable broadcasters can achieve with the right technology partner," said Eric Yu, vice president, Greater China for Juniper Networks. "The Yuanshen Broadcasting Network project is significant for Juniper Networks as it represents our first major backbone deployment in Heilongjiang Province and is our first provincial-level deployment in China's broadcasting industry."
