The University of Western Ontario Protects Network with the Juniper Networks Security Solution
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 1, 2004-Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that the University of Western Ontario (Western), one of Canada's oldest and best universities, has deployed Juniper Networks intrusion detection and prevention (IDP) systems to protect the school's network from potentially harmful traffic such as peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, worms and trojans.
"The Juniper Networks IDP products are instrumental in helping protect the University's network from vulnerabilities of P2P file sharing and other harmful traffic," said Denis Regnier, manager, technical support of information technology services at Western. "Since the University's deployment of the Juniper Networks IDP, we have been able to leverage the solution for greater functionality and develop competitive tools for increased security."
In 2003, Western recognized that a security policy needed to be applied to the academic environment in order to protect the network from being attacked by both insiders and those not associated with the University. Previously not having a stateful firewall, the University knew the threats and the consequences associated with harmful traffic traversing the network.
Western has deployed two Juniper Networks NetScreen-IDP 500 systems, which provide up to 500 Mbps throughput and operate inline to accurately detect and drop malicious traffic in real-time before it reaches its victims. The devices are deployed in active/active mode and are located between the gateway and core routers to scan wireless and Internet traffic. The NetScreen-IDP uses proprietary technologies and multiple detection methods to accurately identify attacks and minimize the number of false positives.
