Telefonica Deploys Juniper Networks E-series Platforms to Deliver Entertainment Services to Consumers

Video on Demand, Digital TV and Music Services Delivered to Spanish Households

SUNNYVALE, Calif., December 17, 2003—Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), today announced that Telefonica is delivering entertainment services across its broadband IP over ADSL network using Juniper Networks Infranet-ready E-series BRAS platform The equipment is part of an order awarded to Siemens ICN by Telefonica to extend its broadband network with equipment from Juniper Networks. The first set of services is being delivered to households in Barcelona, Madrid and Alicante, Spain through Imagenio.

"Imagenio" is the commercial brand for a set of services packaged by Telefonica Group, aimed at integrating the television and Internet worlds. Content for these services is provided by Telefonica subsidiaries and other content providers. With the Imagenio services consumers will be able to select and watch movies and other programming at their convenience, with the ability to pause, rewind, fast-forward and play using their remote control.

"In the near future consumers will experience a transformation in the way they experience their home entertainment services. Imagenio is the first step towards this transformation. The Juniper Networks platforms are a vital piece of the puzzle in making this happen," said Jose Antonio Castillo, head of the project marketing department at Telefonica.

The Juniper Networks E-series was selected based on its superior implementation of multicast. IP multicasting, necessary for the digital TV services, reduces the load on the server and the network by allowing routers to duplicate and distribute packets where necessary.

"The imagenio deployment is a great example of how carriers are starting to use infranets to deliver new services and change business models, as well as user expectations. Telefonica will be in a position to obtain maximum value from broadband deployments and increase ARPU while customers can enjoy a superior service," said Eddie Minshull, vice president, Operations, Europe Middle East Africa (EMEA), Juniper Networks.

The Imagenio entertainment services have been extensively tested and to date 700 households have the opportunity to enjoy the services. Full commercial launch in Spain's two biggest cities, Barcelona and Madrid, will happen as soon as Telefonica receives approval from the Spanish regulator.
