Cox Communications Deploys Juniper Networks T-series Routing Platforms in National IP Network

Peering Initiative Enables More Profitable, Large-Scale, Secure Digital Services

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 19, 2003—Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that Cox Communications (NYSE: COX), a Fortune 500 broadband services provider and the fourth largest U.S.-based cable company, has deployed Juniper Networks T-series routing platforms in its national IP backbone network. To support annual doubling of Internet traffic growth, the T320 platforms serve as peering points in Cox Communications' new IP backbone network and provide increased performance, proven stability and enhanced security, while also reducing operational expenses.

The scalability and flexibility of the Juniper Networks T320 platforms are an integral component of Cox's peering strategy, especially with new processing-intensive services such as Quality of Service (QoS) and MPLS. Cox has deployed peering capabilities to manage bandwidth growth at regional data centers by re-directing IP traffic. This approach is a new way to engineer backbone services that will significantly cut operating expenses and improve performance. "The Cox IP network is growing at an unprecedented pace and we needed new technology that could keep up with this growth, while also enabling us to control costs at our regional data centers," said Jay Rolls, vice president of Telephony and Data Engineering at Cox. "We turned to Juniper after an extensive evaluation process with multiple vendors. The T320 platform is a perfect fit for our network, providing increased performance and security, while also enabling us to better allocate resources. Juniper will play an even more important role as Cox continues its peering initiatives and drives more traffic through strategic peering locations."

By alleviating the capital risks associated with introducing new facilities for alleviating bandwidth constraints, the Cox Communications T320 deployments exemplify the Model for Integrated Network Transformation (MINT), a framework that facilitates the rapid creation and deployment of innovative and value-added services to increase revenue generation via a service-rich, cost-efficient, integrated infrastructure.

"Cox Communications' deployment of the T-series is continued validation that Juniper delivers cost-effective, scalable and secure solutions that help customers grow networks and increase service revenues, while also controlling infrastructure costs," said Christine Heckart, vice president of marketing, Juniper Networks. "We are committed to providing solutions that support the MINT, which transforms packets into profits and delivers value and intelligence to our customers and their business of networking."

About The MINT

The Model for Integrated Network Transformation (MINT) outlines Juniper Networks vision for transforming the business of networking. The MINT enables companies to transition from a commodity transport business model to a more lucrative, value-added services model. The four-layer framework, which includes a Bit Transport and Connectivity Layer, Resource Segmentation Layer, Packet Processing Layer and a Policy and Control Layer, optimizes a company's capital cost structure and reduces operational costs, while also enabling significant new services to be deployed with an assured user experience.
