Dutch Railways Selects NetScreen To Secure National Data Network

Sunnyvale, CA - September 8, 2003—NetScreen Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: NSCN) today announced that Dutch Railways, which delivers passenger transport services throughout the Netherlands and internationally, has deployed NetScreen’s integrated firewall and virtual private network (VPN) security solutions to provide high-speed, mission-critical firewall protection for its nationwide data network.

An evaluation of Dutch Railways’ network, which is accessed by more than 300 remote locations and links to partner networks, third-party reservation portals and the Internet, uncovered that it had become very fragmented, had limited throughput and made it difficult to secure the organization effectively against modern attacks. Consequently, Dutch Railways streamlined its resources to create a centralized, effectively-managed network that offers Gigabit data throughput for employees and partners, plus fast Internet links for customers wishing to book tickets and source travel information via Dutch Railways’ website.

To secure both the core and perimeter of the network effectively without compromising performance or availability, Dutch Railways purchased and installed purpose-built, hardware-based NetScreen-500 and NetScreen-208 systems, deployed as pairs in high availability mode. With this configuration, Dutch Railways benefits from highly advanced access control and stateful failover capabilities and protects the organization’s local and wide area networks, web servers and databases from external attacks launched via the public Internet.

Stefan van Someren, product manager of information management and technology for Dutch Railways, said, “The organization immediately ruled out legacy software-based security solutions, which can create network bottlenecks and jeopardize availability. NetScreen’s hardware-based solutions provide the performance, reliability and scalability we need to effectively operate our network and maintain availability. NetScreen also delivers excellent cost savings because the virtual systems feature means fewer numbers of physical devices are needed in the future.”

Dutch Railways leverages the virtual systems capability of the NetScreen-500 systems, which enables the organization to use a single device to logically partition the network into separate security zones with distinct security policies that can be applied and centrally managed. This allows Dutch Railways to deploy security measures deep into the core of the network, protecting data resources from misuse and unauthorized access between departments as well as preventing the effect of any breaches launched externally on a particular department from spreading to others, minimizing additional capital and maintenance costs.

“The network operated by Dutch Railways is a dynamic, complex environment to secure and manage. The company’s deployment of a NetScreen solution demonstrates the flexibility, robustness and manageability of our technology. With NetScreen, Dutch Railways can take advantage of the Internet for increased productivity while minimizing network vulnerabilities without jeopardizing network performance,” said David Flynn, vice president of marketing at NetScreen.
