Unisphere Networks Announces SDX-300 Service Deployment System for Edge-optimized Business Services

New Product Designed to Streamline Creation, Provisioning, Delivery and Billing of Network-Based Enterprise Services

Atlanta, GA - June 3, 2002 — Unisphere Networks, Inc, a leading provider of IP infrastructure products to enable data, voice and video services, today announced the immediate availability of the SDX-300 Service Deployment System, which is designed to enable service providers to customize business services for their enterprise customers by streamlining the creation, provisioning, delivery and billing of network-based services. To address increased bandwidth requirements as new services are provisioned, Unisphere Networks also announced the availability of new multilink software services, as well as an OC-48c/STM-16 line module for the ERX Edge Router family.

The SDX is designed to enable service providers to share control of outsourced network services by distributing power to enterprise IT managers. By leveraging the investment in Unisphere Networks' RX Edge Router family, the Service Deployment System is designed to enable service providers to generate additional revenue from existing enterprise connections including DSL, leased line and Ethernet.

The SDX communicates service changes to intelligent edge points and then supplies the service usage information required for customer billing. The SDX supports standards such as COPS, RADIUS, LDAP and CORBA for creating flow-through integration within existing OSS environments. Utilizing the Web-based portal of the SDX, IT managers can dynamically change the service characteristics for their enterprise connections.

"With the SDX, Unisphere is providing an opportunity for our service provider customers to generate incremental revenue with new customized services for their existing customer base," said Chris Lawler, vice president and general manager, IP Routing, Unisphere Networks. "Today's announcement of the SDX reinforces our commitment to provide customers with products that are designed to enable the reliable delivery of revenue-generating services at the network edge."

"Unisphere Networks' new SDX Service Deployment System benefits both the service provider and enterprise business customers," said Ray Mota, chief research officer, Synergy Research Group. "Service providers can extend the life cycle of their capital equipment by adding new service offerings with their existing network infrastructure. Enterprises are able to take advantage of new, more cost-effective IP-based services without the capital cost associated with building their own infrastructure. This balanced control creates an environment of trust and results in cost savings."

The new enhancements announced today for the ERX Edge Router family include support for Multilink PPP (MLPPP) and Multilink Frame Relay (MLFR) on any module that is channelized to fractional or full T1/E1 or T3/E3, as well as an OC-48c/STM-16 line module. MLPPP aggregates multiple physical links into a single logical bundle allowing for customizable bandwidth services for enterprises that require NxT1 access services. The OC-48c/STM-16 line module for the ERX Edge Router provides a high-speed POS or MPLS uplink for high-end Points of Presence (POP). This line module leverages Unisphere Networks' new, second-generation Edge Service Processors (ESP II) to enable wire-speed performance at OC-48 speeds.
