China Telecom Deploys Juniper Networks T-series Platforms for Next Generation IP/MPLS Network

T320 and M20 Platforms with MPLS Architecture Enable China Telecom to Offer Revenue-Generating IP Services

Sunnyvale, CA - December 10, 2002—Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that China Telecommunications Corporation (China Telecom) is building its high density, service-enabled IP/MPLS network using Juniper Networks T320 and M20 routers. China Telecom selected Juniper Networks because its products are optimized for revenue-generating, MPLS-based services and enable a greater return on investment as the network scales.

The deployment of T-series routers in China Telecom's network complements the successful activation of the ERX and M-series routers in the Wuhan, Shanghai, and Sichuan provinces earlier this year. The network provides China Telecom with new revenue opportunities and enables the rapid activation of advanced IP/MPLS services, including tiered access, IP VPNs, and metro Ethernet applications. The MPLS-optimized architecture also enables the transport of Frame Relay and ATM traffic over Layer 2 VPNs, ensuring support for both legacy traffic and new IP services over a single IP/MPLS network. This promotes network efficiency and scalability in order to take advantage of the growing demand for data services in China. According to the China Internet Network Information Center, Internet users in China grew more than 170 percent from 26 million to 45 million from July 2001 to 2002.

"As the migration from offering the traditional connectivity services to new value-added IP services continues, we require a platform that scales to multiple 10 Gbps interfaces in a very compact form factor, while also delivering rich, dependable IP service functionality and quality assurance at high speeds," said Mr. Sun Hao, deputy general manager, China Telecom Beijing. "Given the proven track record of the Juniper Networks ERX and M-series routers installed in the China Telecom network, we are confident that the T320 routers provide us with a reliable and high-density platform for delivering new revenue-generating services with reliability and scale."

The T320 router enables service providers to deploy ultra-dense OC-3 ATM, SONET/SDH aggregation today to provide transport of ATM and Frame Relay customer traffic over MPLS. The platform scales to dense 10 Gigabit interfaces as China Telecom grows its network. It also supports dense Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation critical to metro Ethernet and hosting applications.

"In addition to the recent ERX router and M-series deployments at Shanghai, Sichuan and Wuhan Telecom, we are pleased to be selected by China Telecom for its new IP backbone network in Beijing," said Jason Xie, vice president of China, Juniper Networks. "We are committed to providing customers in China with products that enhance standard access offerings with revenue-generating IP services."

About China Telecom

China Telecom is the country's largest telecommunications operator with businesses covering fixed lines and various value-added Internet services. China Telecom added 35 million fixed line subscribers during 2001 alone, about 50 percent of the world's subscriber growth for the year, and increased its total subscriber base to 179 million, 99 percent of China's total. China Telecom's national Internet network, CHINANET, serves some 32 million Internet users, approximately 80 percent of the national total.
