Department of Energy's Global Research Network Teams with Juniper Networks to Deploy Simultaneous IPv4 and IPv6 Operation

Delivers Scalability and Performance without Compromise to Advance Global Internet Expansion

Sunnyvale, CA - August 28, 2002 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of trusted infrastructures for the New Public Network, and the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) today announced that ESnet has deployed one of the industry's first large-scale production networks to run both IP version 4 (IPv4) and IP version 6 (IPv6) simultaneously on the same routers, connecting hundreds of thousands of scientific researchers around the world.

The successful deployment of the next-generation Internet Protocol, IPv6, in parallel with the current Internet Protocol, IPv4, is an important step in expanding the scope and capabilities of the Internet and demonstrating the viability of IPv4 and IPv6 coexistence. ESnet's dedicated production network made it an ideal test bed for evaluating IPv6 on a large scale. ESnet, which supports research sponsored by the Office of Science in the Department of Energy (DOE), has been one of the leaders in implementing IPv6, and was assigned the very first production IPv6 addressing prefix by the American Registry for Internet Numbers in 1999.

"By working with Juniper Networks, IPv4 and IPv6 now coexist on the same routers in our network, which reduces operational expenditures and enables us to easily migrate to IPv6 services as required," said Michael Collins, network engineering services group leader for ESnet. "Juniper Networks capability to deliver a production-caliber, dual-stack operation enables us to take advantage of the broad range of IPv6 services and the opportunities afforded by global IPv6 adoption."

Last November, Juniper Networks delivered the industry's first production-ready IPv6 solution, which is currently available across all of its M-series and T-series edge and core router platforms and interfaces. The IPv6 protocol extends Internet growth by increasing the number of available addresses for Internet-enabled devices, delivering enhancements to security, quality of service (QoS), and auto-configuration capabilities.

"ESnet is a clear leader in IPv6 technology, particularly with regard to IPv4 and IPv6 coexistence," said Pradeep Sindhu, vice chairman, chief technical officer, and founder of Juniper Networks. "Juniper Networks recognizes IPv6 as a key technology for enabling continued expansion of IP as a strategic global technology platform. Network service providers require systems capable of delivering IPv6 and IPv4 simultaneously in large-scale production environments without compromising network performance or dependability."

Providing valuable addressing space, security enhancements, and network management to an ever-increasing number of Internet-enabled devices and applications, IPv6 continues to garner global interest. Industry analysts, including IDC and Ovum, forecast up to 400 million mobile Internet users over the next three years. This large influx of users will consume previously unthinkable amounts of IP addressing space and drive IPv6 deployment.

To support this growth in Internet-enabled devices, service providers, carriers, and mobile operators worldwide need a simple IP addressing implementation that is easy to implement, secure, highly scalable, and delivers high performance even under the most taxing network conditions. By capitalizing on the software and ASIC-based packet processing features inherent in the M-series and T-series platforms, Juniper Networks exceeds these requirements. In addition, Juniper Networks XML-based JUNOScript API enables customers to rapidly integrate IPv6 capabilities into their operational support systems.

Juniper Networks also brings the knowledge and experience of handling the demanding networks of more than 600 service providers and carriers worldwide. By facilitating a smooth migration that meets their scaling and performance needs, Juniper Networks is enabling global Internet expansion with its production-ready IPv6 offering.

About ESnet

The Energy Sciences Network, or ESnet, is a high-speed network serving thousands of Department of Energy researchers and collaborators worldwide. Managed and operated by the ESnet staff at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, ESnet provides direct connections to more than 40 DOE sites and maintains "peering" arrangements with more than 100 other Internet service providers. Funded principally by DOE's Office of Science, ESnet allows scientists to use unique DOE research facilities and computing resources independent of time and location with state-of-the-art performance levels.
