XO Selects Juniper Networks Routers to Complete Its National OC-192 IP Backbone Network

Business Customers in 63 XO U.S. Markets Benefit from Maximum Speed and Reliability for Voice and Data Services

Sunnyvale, CA - November 6, 2001 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure systems, and XO Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: XOXO), a leading provider of broadband communications services, today announced XO Communications is deploying Juniper Networks M-series Internet routers in its new nationwide OC-192 (10 Gigabits per second speeds) backbone inter-city network.

A combination of Juniper Networks M160 Internet backbone routers and M40 Internet access routers, will deliver network throughput speed and routing intelligence to XO Communications' core network and to each of its individual markets. This network infrastructure will provide inter-city Internet and integrated voice and data services to business customers across 63 U.S. XO markets.

"The growing enterprise business XO customer base is clamoring for a variety of services, including toll-quality voice over a single IP backbone. The decision to upgrade from legacy platforms to Juniper Networks M-series Internet routers was based on their proven reliability, scalability, and performance," said Doug Carter, senior vice president and chief technology officer for XO Communications. "Combined with JUNOS Internet software features and the Internet Processor II ASIC, Juniper Networks Internet routers will provide XO the capability to offer new smart IP services including MPLS VPNs and voice over IP."

Juniper Networks M-series Internet routers will enable XO Communications to migrate traffic from its legacy network to a new single IP infrastructure, thus eliminating the need for numerous and separate voice, IP, and leased-line networks. The new XO network will feature OC-192 speeds, a 16-fold increase over the legacy XO OC-12c (622 Megabit per second speeds) network. With its new, multi-service OC-192 IP network, XO is expected to benefit from increased network speeds, enhanced performance, reduced maintenance and management expenses, and the elimination of costly leased lines.

Juniper Networks M160 Internet backbone routers have been deployed in XO's IP backbone "core-node" points of presence in the following eight cities: New York, Washington, D.C., Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Jose.

XO is also deploying Juniper Networks M40 Internet access routers to efficiently direct and manage network traffic generated from XO metro fiber rings, supporting 63 U.S. cities, into the eight core network nodes for further distribution. All of the XO metro markets are expected be connected via dual OC-12 capacity circuits, providing one of the most robust and extensive metro uplink capabilities in the industry.
