Telstra Selects Unisphere Networks' ERX Edge Router for Routed Data Network Project

ERX Edge Router with MPLS support to reduce operating expenses by consolidating more than 20 IP networks onto a single IP backbone infrastructure

MELBOURNE, Australia (November 5, 2001) - Unisphere Networks, Inc., a leading provider of IP infrastructure products to enable broadband data and voice services, today announced that Telstra (ASX:TLS), Australia's incumbent telecommunications carrier, has selected Unisphere Networks' ERX Edge Router for edge aggregation and IP routing in Telstra's innovative Routed Data Network (RDN) project.

According to Telstra, the ERX was selected for a nationwide deployment because of its advanced feature set, including support for Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) edge functions, along with a number of Virtual Private Network (VPN) options that are all delivered at wire-speed. Unisphere Networks' ERX technology will enable Telstra to consolidate more than 20 separate IP networks by aggregating these networks onto a single IP infrastructure backbone.

David Piltz, general manager, Core & Enterprise Planning & Development, Telstra said, "Our Routed Data Network project is extremely important to Telstra and provides us with the opportunity to deliver next-generation services to our customers. Through the implementation of the advanced MPLS features offered by the ERX, we will have the ability to consolidate our multiple IP networks into a single network which will reduce our operating costs."

"Telstra's drive to integrate its existing IP infrastructure onto our next-generation IP routing products provides a wonderful opportunity and an immense responsibility for Unisphere Networks," said Shaun Page, general manager, Australia / New Zealand, Unisphere Networks. "As the sole edge routing platform, the ERX will play a lead role in this strategic project. After our successful MPLS VPN deployment at Telstra-Saturn in New Zealand, I believe that we are prepared and equipped to meet the challenge of the Telstra RDN project."

Telstra will utilize the sales, implementation and support infrastructure of Siemens Ltd. for the integration of Unisphere equipment into RDN.
