Fusion Communications Calls on Juniper Networks to Deliver Japan's First Full-scale VoIP Service

Juniper Networks M-series Routers Enable Intelligent IP Voice and Data Services Over Fusion's First-class IP Network

Sunnyvale, CA - September 25, 2001 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure systems, today announced that Fusion Communications Corp., one of Japan's largest service providers and a pioneer in full-scale voice over IP (VoIP) services in Japan, has selected Juniper Networks M-series Internet routers for its IP network.

Yoshiaki Hirayama, general manager of Fusion Communications' Network Engineering division said, "We were seeking to become the most innovative provider of IP services while maintaining network performance. Juniper Networks offered us routing hardware and software with superior capabilities to differentiate our IP services from those of our competitors. To offer these services today and provide cost of ownership advantages going forward, we selected Juniper Networks routers for their speed, stability, cost effectiveness, and ability to deliver reliable, high-quality services to our business customers. No other routing systems come close to matching the capabilities offered by Juniper Networks."

In assessing Juniper Networks M-series family of routers, Hirayama also said, "They deliver voice with no delay, and we are impressed with their high level of data performance while supporting multiple applications. We haven't experienced a single hiccup since they started operation. They are easy to operate and are really the perfect routers for both voice and data services."

Fusion Communications established itself as a pioneer in VoIP by establishing a flat rate (20 Japanese Yen) for three minutes for both local and long distance calls, 24 hours a day. Until then, the established practice was to charge progressively higher fees for increasingly longer distance calls. Fusion Communications' VoIP service offers extremely high quality, and the number of subscribers has been steadily rising since VoIP was launched in April 2001.

Fusion Communications' IP network connects Osaka to Shinjuku, Tokyo at a line rate of 2.5 Gigabits per second (OC-48c/STM-16). This high-speed backbone connects to another access point in Otemachi, Tokyo's main business center, which is also inter-network access point (IX) capable. Each of the company's 18 access points employs a set of redundant routers to ensure network availability for peak traffic loads, scalability for new customer demands and additional security.

Fusion's network extensibility is possible through the broad deployment of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). MPLS helps Fusion deliver numerous intelligent services including VoIP, secure IP Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and traffic engineering assistance for Internet access and data centers.
