Pacific Broadband Communications CMTS Designed to Meet CableLabs Newest Standard, DOCSIS 2.0

Company's ASIC Will Accelerate its CMTS's Compliance with DOCSIS 2.0

San Jose, CA - September 4, 2001 — Pacific Broadband Communications (Pacific Broadband), a developer of standards-based broadband solutions for delivering integrated data, telephony, and video over last mile networks, has revealed that it will release a CMTS (cable modem termination system) that supports DOCSIS 2.0 in Q4 2001. This announcement follows CableLabs initial release of requirements for the advanced physical layer (PHY) technologies for DOCSIS 2.0 qualification.

Over the past year, Pacific Broadband has worked closely with CableLabs on advanced physical layer technologies. Pacific Broadband's ASIC (application specific integrated circuit), which has been developed from the ground up for exclusive use with its CMTS, features Advanced-TDMA (advanced frequency agile time division multiple access), one of two technologies that is now being specified for DOCSIS 2.0. The CMTS with A-TDMA will be commercially available Q4 2001. Last month, cable operators had the opportunity to demonstrate Pacific Broadband's A-TDMA solution at CableLabs' Summer Conference. Demonstrations were also available at the National Cable Telecommunications Association's Cable 2001 Show in June.

In anticipation of the initial DOCSIS 2.0 specification, Pacific Broadband Communications' team of communication industry veterans has developed techniques to support 30 Mbps upstream using A-TDMA and S-CDMA, the two techniques recommended by CableLabs for inclusion in DOCSIS 2.0. A CMTS that supports both A-TDMA and S-CDMA (synchronous code division multiple access) will be available early next year. To increase data throughput further than the anticipated DOCSIS 2.0 specification, the company has developed its next generation CMTS ASIC to also support active noise suppression, equalization and compression techniques.

"Thanks to the first-rate communications ASIC design and digital signal processing teams that we have assembled at Pacific Broadband, we have long anticipated the adoption of A-TDMA and S-CDMA," said Dr. Hikmet Sari, Chief Scientist, Pacific Broadband Communications, a world-renowned innovator, author and patent holder on A-TDMA and S-CDMA technologies. "Our experience and aggressive development efforts have earned us a head start in integrating the DOCSIS 2.0 technology into our own CMTS ASIC," said Sari. "As a result, we expect to be one of the first vendors qualified by CableLabs for compliance with the final DOCSIS 2.0 specification."

In July, Pacific Broadband Communications was the first vendor to pass CableLabs CMTS Qualification with custom silicon (http://www.cablemodem.com/CQ.PDF), a huge departure from the legacy chip sets that are commonly used by other vendors. Pacific Broadband Communication's has developed the industry's first 20 channel CMTS ASIC, which is 20 times more dense than current solutions that provide one channel per chip.

A list of Pacific Broadband publications related to A-TDMA and S-CDMA technologies will be available September 5, 2001 at 9 a.m. PST.
