Juniper Networks Selected by New Zealand CLEAR Communications for Enhanced Internet Infrastructure

CLEAR Communications' Core and International IP Backbone Network Gains Smart IP Services for Customers

Hong Kong - July 25, 2001 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure systems, today announced its Internet backbone routers are fully deployed by CLEAR Communications ("CLEAR"), a leading business information communications company in New Zealand. This new installation is the first fully deployed and operational Juniper Networks combined backbone and international transit router network in New Zealand.

CLEAR upgraded its national IP core and its International Transit core network from New Zealand to the US using Juniper Networks M20 Internet backbone routers. This new platform could enable CLEAR to offer new smart IP services using Juniper Networks IP infrastructure such as premium accessibility and value-added applications to end-users including Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), Voice over IP (VoIP), and video on demand.

"CLEAR has upgraded its entire IP core backbone network to enable quicker delivery and greater accessibility of its Internet access services to customers. Connecting customers and providing the solutions they need through business excellence, continuous improvement, superior customer service, innovation and competitive offers are key priorities and this move reinforces that," said Drew Gilpin, general manager of eBusiness at CLEAR Communications.

"This new high-speed, reliable infrastructure will place CLEAR among the leading service providers within the Asia Pacific region. The upgrade to Juniper Networks routers is a significant step forward for CLEAR's IP services for extendability in offering multiple, concurrent IP services to customers including high-performance peering services and data center access. We are also investigating Juniper Networks Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network capabilities with a distinct path for offering VPN services in the future."

The new M20 routers are deployed at three major nodes in New Zealand—Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland—and one node in the US, Los Angeles, California. In the past four years, Internet usage and business Internet requirements in New Zealand have grown by 170 percent1, indicating the potential market for CLEAR's advanced IP service offerings.

"This deal demonstrates the need for smart, scalable IP infrastructure at both the local and national level, and particularly for the growing Asia-Pacific market. Juniper Networks products are showing distinctive benefits for local carriers like CLEAR Communications who are competing in local markets. CLEAR's core and international IP backbone network is now capable of delivering a range of IP-based voice and data services and operating significantly faster through the introduction of Juniper Networks M20 routers. The application of these routers, with the advanced Internet Processor II ASIC helps our customers substantially improve the quality and range of their value-added services," said Martin Claridge, director of sales operations of Juniper Networks for Southeast Asia.

Juniper Networks teamed up with leading New Zealand networking specialist, Interconnect, to deliver this solution to CLEAR. "Our knowledge of the local market, as well as experience working with CLEAR on other projects, complemented Juniper Networks product offering to provide a comprehensive platform for new services for CLEAR," added Angus Campbell, general manager of Interconnect. Interconnect is a specialist networking company that designs and builds secure voice and data networks for carrier and enterprise customers.
