EPIK CommunicationsSM Selects Juniper Networks to Deliver Next-generation IP Services to Carriers and Service Providers

EPIK's Ethernet Transport is Latest Addition to Its Enlightened IPSM Services Suite

Orlando, FL - July 11, 2001 - EPIK Communications Incorporated (EPIK), the telecommunications subsidiary of Florida East Coast Industries Inc. (NYSE: FLA, FLA.b) (FECI), and Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet protocol (IP) infrastructure systems, today announced that EPIK is using Juniper Networks M20 and M160 Internet backbone routers to run its IP-on-Wave OC-192c/STM-64 backbone, providing a comprehensive platform for EPIK's enlightened IPSM services. The latest member of the enlightened IP services family, Ethernet Transport, is powered by EPIK's high-performance network, which utilizes Juniper Networks technology.

"Our goal is to continually improve EPIK's value proposition to customers by expanding our suite of enhanced IP services through a state-of-the-art, highly scalable network," said Ken Stauffer, director of product innovation, EPIK Communications. "EPIK utilizes best-in-class technologies to provide reliable, leading-edge services at competitive prices. Juniper Networks helps us achieve these goals, and it was one of the very few vendors at the time who could deliver IP-on-Wave at 10G line rate. Overall, implementing Juniper Networks solutions has helped us enhance our service offerings and reduce operating costs."

EPIK's geo-diverse, fully redundant OC-192c/STM-64 backbone connects 11 major cities in the southeast, including Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville. It currently has approximately 20 Juniper Networks backbone routers in addition to dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technologies. The combined package allows EPIK to deliver a full portfolio of cost-effective IP services that add value to customers' networks without compromising performance or network integrity.

"Being able to deliver multiple services over one common IP infrastructure is key to service providers and carriers looking for ways to enhance their service offerings to their customers, while lowering their total cost of ownership," commented Carl Showalter, vice president of marketing, Juniper Networks. "EPIK's commitment to help carriers and service providers meet their goals is backed by their decision to use only the most cutting-edge, reliable technologies."

EPIK's Ethernet Transport service offers secure, scalable, and cost-effective long-haul connectivity for networking needs such as virtual local area networks (VLANs). Key features include Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) and Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps) access speeds, less than one percent packet loss, 99.9-percent availability, 75-milliseconds or less average monthly latency, with availability at long haul and metro points of presence (POPs). In addition to these new Ethernet services, the enlightened IP suite currently includes dedicated Internet access with IP virtual private network (VPN) services to be launched soon.

From core to edge, the Juniper Networks M-series Internet backbone routers deliver performance, reliability, scalability, and intelligence throughout the network. The M-series routers are based on the Internet Processor II ASIC and JUNOS Internet software. Built on these powerful technologies, the M-series routers deliver predictable, high-speed performance under all network conditions even when executing rich packet processing, such as filtering, rate limiting, and sampling. By supporting Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Juniper Networks products offer solutions for traffic engineering and for leveraging a common IP infrastructure for public and private networks.

About EPIK Communications

EPIK Communications, a leading carriers' carrier, is lighting up a regional fiber network in the Southeastern United States and developing a fiber footprint beyond the Southeast via swaps. EPIK has lit the first 1,500 of 1,850 miles of its Southeast network, which features a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) IP-on-Wave OC-192 (10Gbps) backbone. The Southeast network reaches 11 key cities, including the cities of Atlanta, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and Miami; EPIK is also developing fiber "metro rings" in these five cities. The combination of EPIK's long haul and metro fiber assets, its express rings connecting the major international cable landings in South Florida, and its participation in the NAP of the Americas Consortium, position EPIK to service the growing telecom market in Latin America. EPIK provides wholesale services including bandwidth (private lines), wave services, Internet protocol (IP) services, collocation, and dark fiber to long distance, international, and wireless carriers, Internet service providers (ISPs), and competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs).
