France Telecom Selects Juniper Networks and Ericsson for High-speed Internet Infrastructure

Juniper Networks M160 Internet Backbone Routers and OC-192c Interfaces Scale the Heart of France Telecom North American Backbone Network

Paris - June 6, 2001 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation IP infrastructure systems, today announced that France Telecom, one of the world's leading telephone carriers, has selected Juniper Networks M160 Internet backbone routers for its Points-of-Presence (POPs) at the heart of its North American Backbone Network (NABN).

Specifically designed to address the speed and growing number of smart IP services between the US and Europe, France Telecom NABN will develop its new service offerings for its major multinational customers (corporate accounts as well as carriers and ISPs). The Juniper Networks Internet infrastructure will help France Telecom build revenue-bearing services with fast, reliable connections in their POPs using 10Gbps circuits (OC-192c/STM64). Juniper Networks M-series routers effectively support the full portfolio of France Telecom services including variable speed Internet access, Data, Voice, and Hosting Centers as well as Carrier Wholesale Services. In addition, the France Telecom key locations will benefit from reduced operations costs with the M160 router's reduced footprint and efficient use of power for lower monthly real estate usage and electrical costs.

Juniper Networks teamed up with worldwide partner Ericsson for the supply, installation, and support of the routers. The placement of Juniper Networks M160 routers at key France Telecom locations in its US Network signals significant inroads towards growing IP traffic demand and a concurrent high level of Quality of Service. The Internet backbone routers are part of a breakthrough frame agreement won by Ericsson, which also includes support and services for new offerings such as network-based IP-VPNs and MPLS quality of service protocols.

The selection took place after a rigorous testing phase in France Telecom test labs and operational networks. The performance without service compromise of 10Gbps interfaces coupled with the robustness of the Internet Processor II, and its use of JUNOS software features, give France Telecom IP engineers an operational advantage to focus solely on the deployment of new services, and bring them rapidly to the market, thereby providing fast additional value to their customers.

"This is a significant global carrier customer addition for Juniper Networks in working with France Telecom to build a global IP network infrastructure. Fast, reliable, and scalable network systems from Juniper Networks meet the high reliability and scalability needs of France Telecom to deploy numerous concurrent services today and tomorrow. Juniper Networks hardware, ASICs, and JUNOS software are already in place to help France Telecom take advantage of the new IP infrastructure for quicker time to revenue through the delivery of differentiated revenue generating services," stated Scott Kriens, President and CEO of Juniper Networks, Inc.

About Ericsson

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

About Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network

Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network (PBN) is an Internet-class, carrier-class data backbone and a key component to both wireless and wireline operator's transitions to next-generation networks. PBN enables operators to offer new or expanded services over an IP infrastructure in an extremely reliable and ultra-scalable configuration. PBN is based on the following hardware platforms from Ericsson: the AXI 580 and the AXI 520 IP Backbone routers, AXI 540 Edge Aggregation Router, and AXD 301 High Performance ATM switch. PBN includes a Multiservice Management Suite (MMS) of products that includes in-house-developed tools optimized for next-generation networks and tools from best-in-class partners to address management issues in four key areas: network provisioning, service provisioning, service and network assurance, customer care and billing. PBN also employs Ericsson's innovative range of robust DWDM optical networking products: ERIcsson Optical Networking (ERION).
