Juniper Networks Enables Smart IP Services for Carriers and Service Providers

Leading Service Providers Global Crossing, IntelliSpace and Yipes to Deploy New Services for Lower Total Cost of Ownership

Sunnyvale, CA - May 15, 2001 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure systems, today announced new interfaces and software enhancements that for the first time enable providers and carriers to deliver multiple smart IP services simultaneously over a common IP infrastructure without compromising performance. Building on its commitment to help service providers optimize their investment in IP infrastructure and lower their total cost of ownership, Juniper Networks is leveraging the power of its Internet Processor II ASIC and JUNOS Internet software to enable Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) virtual private networks (VPNs), as well as dedicated access services.

MPLS Virtual Private Networks
New Layer 3 MPLS VPNs extend secure heterogeneous network consolidation with the same high performance, rock-solid reliability, scalability, and manageability service providers expect from Juniper Networks. Based on the RFC 2547 bis standard, with routing functionality handled by the widely deployed border gateway protocol (BGP), Juniper Networks Layer 3 MPLS VPN solution enables service providers to reduce operational costs, while enjoying new revenue opportunities through the delivery of value-added services. With MPLS VPNs service providers retain the traditional benefits of ATM and Frame Relay, while gaining the operational efficiency of consolidating and running multiple services over a common IP infrastructure. For the first time, service providers can offer their customers a fully outsourced, provider-managed, private IP solution. This solution removes the burden of managing complex routing infrastructures from the enterprise, enabling them to focus their valuable resources on their core business. This latest development complements Juniper Networks existing Layer 2 IP VPN offering based on MPLS Circuit Cross-connect.

Global Crossing Ltd. (NYSE: GX), a leading provider of worldwide broadband communication services, will use MPLS-capable routers from Juniper Networks to deploy VPN services throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. "By deploying VPN services with Juniper Networks technology, Global Crossing delivers on the promise of a worldwide, high-speed VPN service that easily scales to meet the needs of our multinational customers. VPN services are a critical component of our product portfolio as Global Crossing migrates from a carrier's carrier to a global enterprise services provider," said Jon Plonka, vice president of Global IP Engineering for Global Crossing. "The Juniper Networks implementation of MPLS-based VPNs allows our customers to let Global Crossing provision and manage their virtual private networks. We've found Juniper Networks leading-edge hardware and software to deliver secure, fast, and reliable connections into our existing global MPLS infrastructure."

IntelliSpace is an Ethernet IP broadband services provider that delivers high-speed Internet connectivity to over 30,000 small, medium, and enterprise-sized businesses around the world. "Juniper Networks is helping us drive high-bandwidth services, such as IP-based VPNs and QoS," said Carlo Lalomia, chief technical officer and co-founder, IntelliSpace. "We need the power of Juniper Networks Internet routers to enable efficient distribution of megabit and gigabit speeds downstream to regional POPs to deliver services such as gigabit virtual private networks and high-speed storage. We are jointly focused on bringing customers a carrier class of service."

To address the management and provisioning of its VPN offerings, Juniper Networks is working with several third-party software vendors, including Dorado Software, Gold Wire Technology, Intelliden, and Orchestream, all of whom are developing software to support Juniper Networks RFC 2547 bis VPNs.

Dedicated Access Solutions
New M-series hardware interfaces for aggregating increasing numbers of dedicated circuits per router include a Channelized STM-1 to E1 for global markets, long-haul Gigabit Ethernet, and Multilink Services, in addition to the existing Channelized DS-3 interface. Thus, service providers can utilize their existing M-series routers to provide dedicated access options to their customers, while capitalizing on the operational simplicity of a common version of the JUNOS software across all platforms.

New accounting profile filters provide a scalable way to collect statistics for accounting and billing applications. By classifying services based on accounting profiles, providers can bill traffic on a user-to-user basis.

Yipes Communications is deploying new Juniper Networks interfaces and software enhancements to enable more efficient routing of traffic and to improve network management. "Yipes is pleased to continue its collaboration with Juniper Networks. New dedicated access services such as long-haul GigE, high-speed network services such as multi-layer VPNs, and service-enabling features such as destination-class usage and accounting profile filters enable us to significantly differentiate our offerings and open up new revenue opportunities," said Kamran Sistanizadeh, chief technology officer at Yipes Communications.

"Our service provider customers continue to look for ways to reduce operational costs and deploy new revenue-generating services on their existing IP infrastructure," said Carl Showalter, vice president of marketing at Juniper Networks. "These new, smart IP services provide the same high performance, scalability, and reliability that both carriers and Internet providers expect. For the first time, service providers can offer new revenue-generating services while maintaining optimal performance."

Carl Showalter will discuss how Juniper Networks is optimizing the service provider infrastructure with smart IP services via a conference call Web cast.
