Juniper Networks and Sonus Networks Team to Build Integrated Voice and Data Networks

Industry Leaders Pair Voice and Data Services for Complete Carrier IP Core Network Solution

Sunnyvale, CA and Westford, MA - May 2, 2001 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) and Sonus Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: SONS), today announced they are working together to enable service providers to offer integrated voice and data over their existing infrastructures with the highest levels of performance, reliability, and quality of service. Through their joint sales and marketing alliance, Juniper Networks and Sonus are working together to deliver carrier-class solutions harnessing the latest innovations in MPLS/Traffic Engineering, service-aware routing, and differentiated services.

The two companies are actively engaged in building converged core network infrastructure for carriers worldwide, including service provider Zephion Networks. Zephion has deployed an IP MPLS nationwide backbone using Juniper Networks and Sonus equipment to offer packet telephony and network-based services, as well as integrated data-centric solutions for business customers.

"By working with Juniper Networks and Sonus, leaders in the development of the new public network, we're able to build out an extremely robust, scalable IP network that supports mission-critical business applications and adapts to increasing bandwidth demands," said Heidi Heiden, Zephion Chairman and CEO. "As the leading provider of a programmable Internet services delivery platform, Zephion Networks leverages the most advanced Internet technologies to provide differentiated, policy-driven Internet services to our customers."

"We're pleased to be partnering with Sonus Networks to help carriers like Zephion take advantage of the new IP infrastructure to realize their vision of delivering differentiated revenue generating services," commented John Riedel, vice president, business development, Juniper Networks.

The telecommunications industry is undergoing a major transformation, one in which service providers are deploying converged packet networks to support both data and voice traffic. The migration to the new public network has significant infrastructure implications for all carriers as they seek packet-based solutions that provide the levels of reliability, scalability, and quality of service required in the core of the network. The combination of Juniper Networks industry-leading Internet core routing technologies and Sonus' packet voice infrastructure solutions is allowing carriers to build robust, converged networks that meet the extremely high standards established by the public network over the past few decades. Moreover, the new public network, enabled by next-generation voice and data solutions, gives carriers the ability to develop and deliver a range of new services not previously feasible through separate data and voice networks.

"The development of the new public network creates significant opportunities for carriers to redefine their competitive positions," said Hassan Ahmed, president and CEO of Sonus Networks. "Both Juniper Networks and Sonus are keenly focused on developing products facilitating this major transition—Juniper Networks is recognized as the dominant vendor in core routing solutions, and Sonus pioneered the market for carrier-class packet telephony solutions. We look forward to working together to help our carrier customers deploy the next-generation networks that will support their business objectives."
