Juniper Networks Reaches Beyond the Core

Deployments Set with Leading Service Providers and Carriers

Sunnyvale, CA - September 19, 2000 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation IP infrastructure systems, today announced it is enabling the rapid bandwidth build-out at the edges of service provider networks with a suite of innovative IP solutions. The suite includes two new M-series platforms (M5 and M10 routers) designed for space- and power-constrained environments, a new set of high-speed, dedicated access T1/E1 and channelized DS-3 interfaces, and new access features for JUNOS Release 4.1 Internet software. All of these solutions are shipping today. Leading service providers and carriers using these new solutions include APEX Network Technology Corporation, AduroNet, Broadband Office, Fusion Communications Corporation, IPergy, and Verio.

The M5 and M10 Internet backbone routers are the first platforms to offer wire-rate (T1/E1 to OC-48c/STM-16c) performance with over ten times the forwarding and route lookup capacity, using only 25 percent of the power and space consumption of existing routers deployed for dedicated access today. The new T1/E1 and channelized DS-3 interfaces, along with new JUNOS Release 4.1 service features are available for all the M-series systems (the M5, M10, M20, M40, and M160 routers), further optimizing both core and edge environments. These new products reduce operational costs and increase efficiency since the same JUNOS software runs across all Juniper Networks platforms.

"Our purpose-built routers are used in the world's largest and fastest growing networks. The current solutions in the dedicated access market lack the features and performance needed by our customers. It is a natural evolution to extend our backbone strengths and experience gained in the core to the edges of their networks," said Scott Kriens, chief executive officer and president of Juniper Networks. According to Tam Dell'Oro, founder of Dell'Oro Group, the dedicated access opportunity worldwide is $1.3 billion or one third of the current legacy high-end router market for 2000.

The strengths of the Juniper Networks routers are also directly applicable to the metro core—a new emerging market. The unparalleled policy, control, and security features of the M-series routers enable metro service providers to build smaller-scale versions of core infrastructure backbones. These "mini-cores" are essential for scaling the metro networks that connect local providers to national providers and deliver access to information located on the metro network.

"The metro market is an emerging new segment with significant growth potential," noted Tim Smith, principal analyst for next generation network infrastructure at Dataquest. "Metro providers need to build core networks similar to those of traditional wide area IP service providers, but on a much smaller geographic scale. Juniper Networks new M5 and M10 routers are targeted at this rapidly growing and evolving market space."

To grow their businesses, service providers need fast, intelligent networks. All the M5 and M10 routers have the breakthrough Internet Processor II ASIC that enables complex services such as packet filtering for increased security and sampling to gain visibility into traffic patterns. With each JUNOS release more Internet Processor II ASIC capabilities are added. The latest release, JUNOS 4.1, introduces rate limiting, which reduces operations overhead by enabling service provider staff to automatically adjust bandwidth availability on a per customer basis, rather than having to deploy DSU equipment to manually adjust bandwidth. This results in substantial time and cost savings and allows the provider to offer attractive, tiered and burstable-rate services to their customers.

The new M5 and M10 routers are the fourth and fifth platforms that Juniper Networks has shipped within 24 months. Both systems are three rack units high (5.25" or 13.3cm). The M5 router has four interface slots, while the M10 router has eight interface slots. An initial system configuration costs $25K (M5 router) and $40K (M10 router), with interfaces starting at $10K.
