Metromedia Fiber Network Planning to Deploy Global Optical Network Using Juniper Networks M160 Routers

MFN's Worldwide Optical IP Network to Benefit from Increased Speeds and Security Measures

New York, NY - July 31, 2000 — Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc., (MFN) (Nasdaq: MFNX) and Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR), have announced the purchase and deployment of 170 Juniper Networks M160 Internet backbone routers by MFN. MFN is the leader in deployment of optical IP Internet infrastructure within key global metropolitan areas internationally, and provider of world-class data centers and Internet connectivity through its AboveNet Communications subsidiary. Juniper Networks is a leading provider of IP infrastructure equipment.

MFN is presently deploying the M160 routers throughout its worldwide optical IP network, including all Internet Service Exchange (ISX) facilities, as part of a global OC-192c (10 gigabits/second) backbone network deployment.

"Our new M160 routers with the Internet Processor II ASIC represent the latest in core network routing technology by delivering performance without compromise and enabling services at speeds never seen before," said Scott Kriens, chairman and CEO of Juniper Networks. "This deployment plan clearly reflects MFN's commitment to its customers to utilize the most advanced technology to deliver the most reliable and best Internet experience possible."

In addition to increased bandwidth capacity and processing power, MFN's deployment of M160 routers represents advancements in the areas of network security and network traffic shaping. The Internet II processor ASIC is capable of filtering 10 Gigabit links at wire speed, enabling increased security measures against various forms of denial of service (DOS) attacks. MFN is also leveraging the sampling and logging capabilities of the M160 router with the superior connectivity of the AboveNet global one-hop network to optimize traffic.

"We are always looking for breakthrough infrastructure technology to ensure that our IP network is the most robust, secure, and reliable in the world," said Nick Tanzi, president and COO of Metromedia Fiber Network. "Our purchase of the M160 routers represents a valuable addition to our suite of defenses against attacks on our network. Furthermore, this leading-edge technology helps us complete our planned network expansion faster and more reliably."

Metromedia Fiber Network's planned deployment of an all-optical IP architecture over a dedicated fiber optic network that reaches throughout the local loop in 67 cities in North America and Europe will seamlessly connect all AboveNet facilities. This expansive network will provide customers with exceptionally fast and reliable connectivity to the Internet. The improved capacity and reach of the network, with up to multi-terabit-per-second capacity, combined with world-class co-location facilities, provides an ideal IP infrastructure for Internet-centric companies.
