CIENA, Juniper Networks Enable Next-Generation Broadband Services

Leaders in Optical and IP Networks Announce 10G Interoperability, Arrival of Next-generation IP-to-optics Networking

Linthicum, MD and Mountain View, CA - April 20, 2000 — CIENA Corporation (Nasdaq:CIEN), a leading provider of intelligent optical networking systems, and Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR), provider of the industry-leading M160 Internet backbone router, today announced the successful completion of interoperability testing between 10Gbps (OC-192c/STM-64) optical and IP networking platforms.

Direct connectivity between CIENA's MultiWave CoreStream™ intelligent optical transport system and Juniper's M160 full-performance core router makes 10Gbps next-generation optical networks, delivering pure 10G IP services over glass, a reality for service providers.

"The announcement from two market-leading innovators, CIENA and Juniper, propels us forward into the next-generation of broadband IP-based services," said Julian de Bosdari, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Business Development at iaxis, a pan-European network operator using CIENA and Juniper systems at its network core. "We've already implemented IP over glass at 2.5Gbps. For iaxis, the ability to multiply this fourfold and transport 10G IP signals over glass is an essential enabler in delivering new generation e-commerce and application portals. It takes our vision of an Internet-based economy, where voice is free and net-computing the norm, a step closer to reality."

Interoperability testing included the successful passing of 10G IP data packets when the Juniper Networks M160 router was directly connected to the CIENA 10G CoreStream intelligent optical transport system. With next-generation 10G systems from both companies commercially available and now interoperable, CIENA and Juniper continue to lead the market with advanced technologies for a networked economy.

"With the M160 router, Juniper is striving to help carriers quickly scale their networks and introduce new, faster services for their customers," said Scott Kriens, CEO at Juniper Networks. "Integrated 10G IP-to-optics takes that philosophy a step further by dramatically simplifying the network for the fastest service transmission available today. Service providers should achieve improved scalability and more cost-effective networks."

"With CIENA providing deployable 10-gigabit capacity in real networks and Juniper's M160 filling those 10G circuits with wire-rate packets, our customers are building some of the world's largest Internet backbones today," said Patrick Nettles, President and CEO of CIENA. "Sending pure IP packets directly over very large optical pipes is only the beginning of network innovations to come. Optical networking, and this kind of direct connectivity between IP and optics, will enable service providers to offer new high-bandwidth services at a fraction of the cost of legacy solutions."

Juniper's M160 Internet backbone router is the first full-performance OC-192c/STM-64 platform. By providing aggregate route lookup rates in excess of 160 million packets per second and aggregate throughput exceeding 160Gbps, it allows service providers to grow their networks rapidly and reliably to take advantage of increased optical bandwidth.

Carriers using Juniper's M160 routers in conjunction with CIENA's MultiWave CoreStream are able to create open, multi-service core networks with the most network capacity available today. CoreStream is the industry's first intelligent optical transport platform scalable to a capacity of approximately 2 Tbps.
