Juniper Networks Delivers Sixth Release of JUNOS Software

Leading Internet Software Provides Major Enhancement

Mountain View, CA - April 17, 2000 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation IP infrastructure systems, today announced immediate availability of the latest release of its leading Internet software, JUNOS 4.0. This marks the sixth release of JUNOS software over 20 months. The JUNOS 4.0 release supports a common feature set across all Juniper Networks platforms: the M20, M40, and M160 Internet backbone routers. It is the first release of software to support the M160 router, and is the first release to enable the new capabilities of the breakthrough Internet Processor II ASIC. The JUNOS 4.0 release also includes significant enhancements to MPLS and configuration management, keeping it at the forefront of both reliability and functionality for Internet and multiservice IP environments.

"I'm very pleased with our record of delivering high quality, timely software releases," said Peter Wexler, VP of Engineering, Juniper Networks. "The quality and consistency of features across all our systems enable our customers to upgrade to new releases quickly, taking immediate advantage of industry leading capabilities."

Building on its early support of MPLS, JUNOS 4.0 adds support for the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) signaling standard. LDP enables use of standard signaling and provides interoperability with access devices that use LDP to establish and tunnel VPN traffic at the edge of the network. JUNOS Internet software's capabilities for Internet, multicast, class of service, and MPLS circuit cross connect, provide service providers with the ability to carry multiple services over a common IP infrastructure. With the full forwarding performance of Juniper Networks platforms, and the rich security features of Internet Processor II, service providers can build best in class, multiservice cores with full performance across services.

JUNOS software continues to improve its capabilities for managing ever more complex router configurations. By enabling service providers to group a set of configuration statements together and apply them at one time, the JUNOS 4.0 release makes network management both more efficient and more scalable. Individual command authorization enables operators to individually select commands to allow or deny access to a specified login class, providing a finer granularity of security. The rich comparison and review of existing configurations to historical or centrally maintained configurations facilitates version control.

The JUNOS 4.0 release also includes online access to complete locally stored JUNOS software configuration documentation. With easy access to detailed configuration information and examples of JUNOS software commands, operators now have superior online help.
