Juniper Networks Breakthrough ASIC Delivers Performance without Compromise

Enhances Security, Enables High Bandwidth Services

Mountain View, CA - April 17, 2000 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation IP infrastructure systems, today announced immediate availability of a breakthrough ASIC, the Internet Processor II. Purpose built for the Internet, the Internet Processor II builds on the fundamental performance and reliability advances of Juniper Networks first generation Internet Processor by adding enhanced security functions, increased visibility into network operations, and rich service creation capabilities. Because the Internet Processor II ASIC breaks through the performance limitations of current software based approaches, service providers can scale their operations and service offerings regardless of circuit speed or density.

"While other routers have offered IP packet filtering, shaping, and policing in software in the past, the Internet Processor II offers even more flexibility at little or no cost in terms of performance. " said Vint Cerf, MCI WorldCom senior vice president for Internet Architecture and Technology. "The ability to perform these functions at OC-192c wire speeds is unprecedented in the industry."

The new capabilities enabled by the JUNOS 4.0 release include IP packet filtering, sampling, counting, and load balancing capabilities. By deploying packet filtering anywhere at any circuit speed in their networks, service providers gain flexibility to more efficiently manage the security of their networks. Sampling and logging give visibility into network trends and traffic patterns at a detailed level, allowing better capacity planning and traffic optimizations in high growth environments. Counting can be used for traffic analysis. Load balancing helps to optimize the use of existing network links. Over time, additional capabilities of the ASIC will be enabled in later versions of JUNOS software.

"Software based filtering on a given circuit tops out at approximately 200,000 packets per second (pps). The Internet Processor II can filter at over 20,000,000 pps on a 10-gigabit per second (Gbps) OC-192c/STM-64 circuit. This represents a 100-fold improvement over currently deployed solutions." said Pradeep Sindhu, founder and CTO of Juniper Networks. "Because of our high performance design, we give service providers superior tools for network operation and service creation."

The Internet Processor II has over 2.5 million gates, twice the size of Internet Processor and offering far richer capabilities. Internet Processor II was designed by Juniper Networks and fabricated by IBM Microelectronics.

Internet Processor II is available across all Juniper systems—the M20, M40, and M160 routers. The M160 ships with the Internet Processor II. Existing customers with M20 and M40 routers can take advantage of the powerful, new chip with a single, simple upgrade. Upgrades to the M20 router cost $15,000. Upgrades to M40 router cost $25,000.
