Juniper Networks Ships Full-performance M160 Router with OC-192c/STM-64 Interfaces

Deployments Set with Leading Carriers

Mountain View, CA - March. 28, 2000 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation IP infrastructure systems, today announced production availability of its full-performance core router—the M160 Internet backbone router. The M160 router is the industry's first platform to support 10-Gbps (OC-192c/STM-64) circuits, the next-generation capacity level for leading carriers. Ready for immediate deployment in production networks, the M160 router delivers both breakthrough performance for all packet sizes and high reliability under all networking conditions. Given the constantly shifting traffic patterns at the Internet core, this combination of speed and consistent operation makes the M160 platform the router of choice for the Internet's largest carriers and service providers.

Just as the M40 Internet backbone router was the first product to offer wire-rate OC-48c/STM-16 support, the M160 router is the first product to offer wire-rate OC-192c/STM-64 support. These achievements are a result of Juniper Networks ongoing leadership in high-speed ASIC design.

Since each OC-192c/STM-64 interface connects to a clear channel 10-Gbps circuit, a fully-loaded M160 router can handle 160-Gbps throughput at a forwarding rate of 160 Mpps. Carriers prefer dealing with high-bandwidth circuits because they simplify capacity planning and administration of rapidly growing networks.

"Juniper Networks continues to optimize for the key trends in IP networking. Carriers will have large numbers of OC-48c/STM-16 circuits this year and will start turning up OC-192c/STM-64. The M160 router fits this requirement with high reliability, feature-rich software, and leading-performance hardware," said Christine Heckart, president of Telechoice, Inc. "Having this router available now could allow Juniper Networks to lock up a large percentage of the high-speed Internet core for the next 12 to 18 months."

Deployment and operation of the M160 router is straightforward due to its full support of JUNOS Internet software, making it operationally compatible with Juniper Networks M40 and M20 Internet backbone routers. In addition, the M160 router offers a full range of interface support, ranging from SONET/SDH (OC-192c/STM-64, OC-48c/STM-16, OC-12c/STM-4, OC-3/STM-1), Gigabit Ethernet, ATM (OC-12/STM-4, OC-3/STM-1), and Channelized OC-12 to DS-3. Carriers and service providers deploying M160 routers are able to seamlessly expand capacity and create open, multi-service core networks.

The M160 router supports service creation in a rapid, open manner by supporting multiple IP-based services with full performance and standard implementations. In addition to public services such as the Internet, multicast, and classification with CoS queuing, JUNOS software and the M160 router support a full range of MPLS signaling standards, enabling MPLS traffic engineering and MPLS VPNs.

"The M160 Internet backbone router continues Juniper Networks strong record of consistent execution of high quality products. Just like the M20 router, the M160 router is announced with immediate customer acceptance and support," said Scott Kriens, chief executive officer, Juniper Networks. "By ongoing delivery of industry-leading features at wire rate, we enable our customers to focus on the rapid growth of their networks and the introduction of new services to their customers."

The M160 router is available immediately. An initial system configuration costs $125K, with interfaces starting at $20K.
