Juniper Networks, Inc. Deploys M40 Internet Backbone Routers at Speedport, a Versatel Telecom Subsidiary

Mountain View, CA - February 3, 2000 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR), a leading provider of IP-optimised infrastructure platforms, has announced that it will provide SpeedPort N.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of VersaTel Telecom, with its M40 Internet backbone routers. In the first phase of this significant upgrade of SpeedPort's IP backbone network, the company will deploy nine M40 routers at the largest points of presence (PoPs) around the world.

The Juniper Networks M40 is the first Internet backbone router designed specifically to meet the performance requirements of global IP service providers, and as such, is being implemented as part of the core infrastructure that carries SpeedPort's pan-European and US IP-based services.

The M40 routers have been installed in London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Palo Alto, Chicago, New York and Washington DC and will shortly be deployed in Frankfurt and Paris as part of the first phase of SpeedPort's network build. SpeedPort is also using JUNOS Internet software for testing and modelling purposes and is planning to order more M40 routers as it extends the reach of its network.

"The nature of our business model demands a core which enables flexible hosting and co-hosting service options at the core edge," said Tony Kiehn, Operations Director of SpeedPort. "The performance of the Juniper Networks router and the reliability of JUNOS software gives us an unparalleled combination of bandwidth, resilience, and manageability, and will enable us to provide a wide range of ultra-reliable, IP-based services, including voice and video."

"The global market for IP services is rapidly growing, and this deployment of M40 routers by SpeedPort across its European and US backbone network is an excellent illustration of this continuing trend," said Tony Morrish, Operations Director EMEA of Juniper Networks. "Thanks to our leading market technology, Juniper Networks is rapidly becoming the manufacturer of choice in the Internet backbone infrastructure market."

The Juniper Networks M40 is the first of a new generation of Internet routing platforms designed to combine the performance of switching and routing with thoughput of over 40 Gbps and industry-leading packet lookups of 40 Mpps. The M40 router, supported by the industry's first Internet-optimised operating system, currently is deployed in the world's largest and fastest Internet Networks.
