CIENA and Juniper Networks Demonstrate Interoperability

Next-generation Network Architecture Exhibited at OFC, Booth #901

Linthicum, MD and Mountain View, CA - February 23, 1999 — CIENA Corporation (Nasdaq:CIEN) and Juniper Networks, Inc., provider of the industry-leading M40 Internet backbone router, today announced successful interoperability testing between Juniper Networks M40 router and CIENA's MultiWave Sentry® dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical networking system.

The announcement demonstrates the direct connectivity of Juniper Networks and CIENA's equipment and showcases the availability of an integrated Internet Protocol (IP)-to-DWDM solution that dramatically simplifies IP packet transmission via a MultiWave® optical core.

"Competitive carriers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) searching for better alternatives to legacy network architectures will find the results of our interoperability testing with Juniper compelling," said Steve Chaddick, CIENA's senior vice president, strategy and corporate development. "The capacity, reliability and flexibility of a network built with Juniper Networks M40 routers on a CIENA MultiWave optical core offers significant bandwidth and service flexibility."

Testing between CIENA and Juniper Networks utilized cross- continent IP to DWDM network topologies. The evaluation also demonstrated the M40's ability to meet the stringent jitter measurements required by the Bellcore GR 253 standard by successfully passing jitter-free packets continuously using the MultiWave Sentry system.

"The phenomenal growth of Internet traffic is driving ISPs to evaluate transmission needs in their architectural planning," stated Dana Cooperson, senior analyst with telecommunications market analysis firm RHK. "Successful interoperability testing between Juniper Networks and CIENA demonstrates the feasibility of Internet architectures based on direct optical transport of IP traffic without intervening layers. This testing provides evidence to ISPs that they can simplify and cost-reduce their networks while maintaining reliability."

The industry's first wirespeed OC-48 router capable of optical forwarding rates of 40 gigabits per second, Juniper Networks M40 Router passed wire-rate OC-48 traffic absolutely error free through 12,000 Km of fiber (that is, 24 spans of 500 Kms each) via a MultiWave optical network. The M40 OC-48 optical interface used standard default settings and required no regenerators or external clock distribution systems to handle the link, thus proving that large IP-to-DWDM topologies using CIENA and Juniper Networks equipment are easily achievable today.

"Optical service providers are demanding backbone routers that scale with network growth and provide simple IP-over-glass connectivity," said Joe Furgerson, vice president of marketing for Juniper Networks. "We designed the M40 Router to provide both full wire rate performance at OC-48 at Layer 3 and to be seamlessly interoperable with a leading optical networking equipment vendor like CIENA, with strict adherence to the optical standards demanded for long-haul networks."

Juniper Networks M40 wire speed-performance backbone router began shipping in volume last year. The M40 processes 40 million packets per second (Mpps), delivering the fastest backbone routing performance today. Unmatched port density from DS3 to OC-48, coupled with JUNOS Internet software, provide the first routing system designed specifically to meet the needs of rapidly growing IP-based high-speed optical service providers.

OFC Demonstration

CIENA and Juniper will be showcasing their products in CIENA's booth #901 at the Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) Conference in San Diego, February 22 through 26.
