Juniper Networks Unveils New Solutions for Service Providers and Carriers with Introduction of the M20 Internet Backbone Router

Mountain View, CA - December 7, 1999 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR), a leading provider of next-generation IP infrastructure systems, today announced the M20 Internet backbone router, a forward step in increasing the performance, reliability, and scalability of Internet backbone technology. Increasing bandwidth at the Internet's core has created demand for a new class of device for space- and power-constrained environments.

The M20 router is purpose-built to alleviate capacity demand on access points in the superPOP (Point of Presence). The M20 router is also a cost-efficient solution for the new IP carrier, creating a high-bandwidth core complemented by high-speed services for the service provider edge in one device.

The M20 router uses Juniper Networks Internet-proven ASIC technology and runs JUNOS Internet software release 3.4, the latest version of the Juniper Networks operating system.

Measuring only 14 inches (35.56 cm) in height, the M20 router brings new levels of port density and performance to provider edge applications, supporting nearly 200 DS-3s in a single chassis and 1000 DS-3s in a standard seven-foot (2.13-m) rack. Juniper Networks ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) technology provides performance forwarding across all interfaces, even when deploying value-added services, such as multicast, classification, CoS queuing, and 802.1Q VLANs.

The M20 router offers the flexibility to deploy a wide variety of interfaces with multiple combinations. Currently available interface types include Gigabit Ethernet, SONET/SDH, ATM, and DS-3. The company also announces three new interfaces: a four-port Fast Ethernet, a four-port E-3, and a Channelized OC-12 to DS-3.

The M20 router joins the M40 Internet backbone router in the Juniper Networks product family. The M20 router leverages proven, market-leading hardware and software technology that is currently deployed and running in the world's largest and fastest-growing service provider networks. Both platforms share common software and services, and common ASIC technology for full compatibility and easy scalability. Critical service provider applications including high-speed access, peering, and hosting are served by both platforms. Physical interfaces are interchangeable between platforms, increasing user flexibility and allowing common sparing.

The M40 router has already set the performance standard at the Internet's core, and with the M20 router introduction we are extending our superior, purpose-built performance advantage to service provider entry points."

Manufacturers base pricing for the M20 router starts at $30,000. The M20 router is available in both 110 VAC and -48 VDC versions and is shipping for production use today. The Fast Ethernet, E-3 and Channeled OC-12 to DS-3 interfaces will start shipping in the first quarter of 2000.
