Juniper Networks M40s to be Deployed in iaxis Pan-European IP Backbone

Mountain View, CA - November 29, 1999 — Juniper Networks, Inc., a leading provider of next generation Internet infrastructure systems, has announced that its M40 routers will form the backbone of a pan-European IP network currently being built by carrier's carrier, iaxis. Phase 1 of the installation will involve the deployment of multiple M40 routers across sites in Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, Paris and London and New York—this implementation will form iaxiscore, designed to be Europe's highest capacity, most cost-effective IP backbone. This service is due to be launched in February 2000, and with the installation of additional M40s, will eventually cover a further 30+ European cities.

"Following extensive evaluation, we selected Juniper's M40 router for its best of breed performance and scalability as well as its ability to provide us with a critical time-to-market advantage. The M40 is a true leading-edge broadband IP platform just as iaxiscore is a state-of-the-art telecommunications service. There is a synergy between what Juniper and iaxis are achieving, in that both are challenging the incumbent hold on the rapidly evolving telecommunications market," added Michael Woodman, Internet Business Development Director at iaxis.

The Juniper M40 will enable iaxis to utilise advanced traffic engineering features such as Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), with access speeds from E1 (2.048Mbps) through to STM-16 (2.5Gbps). iaxiscore will use both optical and SDH bandwidth from the existing iaxisenroute network to directly interconnect with a number of major US and European Internet backbones. iaxiscore is currently being designed and built by Juniper Networks partner and systems integrator K-Net/Telindus.

"This is a significant win for Juniper in Europe," said Scott Kriens, Chairman and CEO, Juniper Networks. "The deployment of Juniper M40s in the iaxis IP backbone is substantial and indicates that iaxis has recognised the clear business advantage that our purpose-built equipment provides in this market space. iaxis is set to become a formidable force in Europe. Using their broadband IP backbone as the foundation for a multiservices network it will deliver Internet transit for ISPs and ASPs, and other voice and data transport capabilities. New value-added services, as enabled by iaxiscore, will create the New Public Network of the future."

About iaxis

Formed in April 1998, iaxis is the telecom industry's only dedicated carrier's carrier. iaxis has no retail division so it can provide wholesale services to the communications industry with complete independence. Target customers include tier one telecom operators, new carriers, systems integrators, resellers, ISPs and mobile operators.

With its technology supplier, CIENA, iaxis has developed the only European network, iaxisenroute that is engineered to yield multi-terabit capacity. Phase One of the network, which went live in May 1999, stretches over 3000 km and covers London, Paris, Strasbourg, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Brussels. Phase Two, which went live in November 1999, expands the network through Stuttgart, Basel, Bellinzona, Geneva, Zurich, Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Nürnberg and Milan. Phase Three, which goes live in Q2 2000, will increase the network by 4000 km. In its entirety, the network will span 12,000 km.

In October 1999, iaxis announced plans to build a 10,000 km submarine network in the Mediterranean, linking the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. iaxis has teamed up with Siemens to start work on the first stretch of this network, linking Barcelona and Marseille.

As part of a strategic joint venture with The Carlyle Group, a leading US global investment firm, iaxis is developing a global network of carrier hotels, iaxishub, to provide telecom providers and ISPs with state-of-the-art co-location services. By providing both bandwidth capacity & co-location services, iaxis allows telecom companies to focus on servicing their most valuable assets, customers, and enter new markets rapidly.
