Juniper Networks Deploys M40 Internet Backbone Routers Across Verio's National Network

Juniper and Verio Team to Deliver Next-generation Services

Mountain View, CA - April 26, 1999 — Juniper Networks, Inc., a market leader in emerging IP infrastructure solutions, today announced that Verio is deploying Juniper M40 Internet backbone routers in Point of Presence (POP) locations throughout Verio's U.S. National Network. The M40 routers, powered by JUNOS, the first Internet-optimized routing operating system, will provide Verio with the benefits of high performance, operational reliability and density of interfaces critical to handling the growth of their customer's traffic. Today's announcement marks the successful deployment of Juniper Networks M40 to deliver next-generation services.

Juniper Networks has worked closely with Verio on technologies which support the delivery of next-generation services, such as Web-hosting, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and e-commerce. Networks have to ensure a more reliable base service and provide a platform for new services as the Internet evolves to become the common public infrastructure. Web hosting services take advantage of the leading performance and density of the Juniper M40 Gigabit Ethernet interface. As part of ongoing efforts to optimize customer responsiveness and network performance, Verio is also actively evaluating traffic-engineering tools based on Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) from Juniper Networks.

"Our business customers want high-speed network topologies that enable them to quickly navigate the Internet, enjoy rich Web content, and utilize new applications such as e-commerce," said Chris DeMarche, CTO of Verio. "New platforms must fit seamlessly and be compatible within our existing routed network environment, and provide the performance and flexibility to provide mission-critical service while we rapidly evolve our new service offerings. Juniper has proven its ability to do so."

"Juniper Networks has worked closely with Verio to develop new service functionality, such as multicast and Gigabit Ethernet for Web hosting and electronic commerce," said Pradeep Sindhu, CTO, Juniper Networks. "Their feedback has been invaluable in establishing our leading-edge functionality. This opportunity has ensured our JUNOS software and M40 system can meet the challenges of Verio's stringent business requirements, which demand the latest technologies from leading IP infrastructure equipment companies."

The M40 represents a new generation of routing device designed to handle the unique network control and reliability demands resulting from the explosive growth of the Internet. As the first platform to integrate switch-level performance with software-enabled routing and control, the M40 features a number of breakthroughs in ASICS-based packet processing, Internet routing and traffic engineering. The M40 also features the fastest packet look-up engine at 40 Mpps (million packets per second), which is supported by the JUNOS software, the industry's first Internet-optimized routing operating system.

"Juniper Networks has its sights on resolving important issues, such as the efficient handling of multicast traffic, raw performance, dense port aggregation, reliability and availability," said Christine Heckart, Telechoice telecommunications analyst. "This latest customer announcement serves to underscore that many leading-edge providers, not just a handful of very large ones, are facing major scalability problems today. Bandwidth alone is no longer the only requirement in scaling and designing networks; an underlying operating system designed for the unique needs of service provider networks is also critical."

Today's announcement of the M40 deployment by Verio is the latest in a series of customer and interoperability announcements from Juniper Networks since the M40 began shipping in September of last year. The product is being deployed in the world's largest and fastest-growing networks, including Cable & Wireless USA, Frontier Global Center, and MCI WorldCom's vBNS. Juniper and CIENA Corporation also recently announced successful interoperability testing between the M40 and CIENA's MultiWave Sentry DWDM optical networking system. British Telecom is current trialing the M40 system.
